Is Stephanie Cutter 'from the left'--or from the White House?
This month, CNN brought back its left-right debate show Crossfire. But is one of the left co-hosts representing the progressive viewpoint--or the White House?
Stephanie Cutter was a campaign strategist for the 2012 Obama campaign, and currently heads up a PR firm called Precision Strategies. But while the premise of the CNN show is that Cutter is "from the left," she still maintains working ties to the White House.
According to a Fox News report (9/3/13), Cutter was part of a PR strategy session on selling the White House's Syria policy. If so, Cutter was meeting with the White House to craft a message--and then going on TV to defend that message.

And it's not just Syria. Cutter was also called in for guidance on how to promote Larry Summers as the next chair of the Federal Reserve (New York Times, 9/17/13).

(7,309 posts)Just because Democrats are "left" relative to the Tea Party (or Attila the Hun), doesn't make them Leftists. In most other civilized and more progressive countries, the Democratic Party would be a center-right party.

I'm sick of this overt attempt to try to divide the Democratic party, especially on a Democratic forum. Just stop.

(7,309 posts)And stop why? Because you're "sick?"
I'm just making an observation that the Democratic Party would be considered a center-right party in Europe and other areas. Just because its relative position to the Republican Party and the Tea Party is left, doesn't make it a Leftist party.
I'm "sick" of people conflating the two.
So "just stop."

I made an observation. And I made my observation known to you and to others.

(40,366 posts)She has been billed by CNN as representing the "Left" in the show's debate, not a representative of the WH. The problem is simply that this is at odds with the stated purpose/format of this particular show.
I don't see it as an issue of how "left" Obama is, but pointing out a potential conflict of interest.

Most Democrats are certainly not leftists. And neither is the President. No leftist would appoint Gen Clapper and Gen Alexander, two of the biggest authoritarian Republicans that exist today.
Being left of the TeaBaggers doesnt mean you are on the left.

(20,166 posts)Cutter seems to be a centrist.
I don't mean that as a criticism of her. If that's where her politics are, so be it. She's apparently done quite well in that capacity.
But anyone who knows what the variations in "left-right" spectrum are wouldn't say she (or Obama, for that matter) were leftists.

(31,962 posts)otherwise the show's regular panelists are: burned-out career politician Newt Gingrich, phony atheist S.E. Cupp, and White House tool Stephanie Cutter. (Cutter a tool? Did i just say that?)

as much as this needs to be called out and recognized,
how can people look at CNN and not see something far more

(1,333 posts)The original was much better. The hosts are 100x more animated than the new ones and Newt Gingrich and Van Jones are not the best TV personalities for such a fast paced debate show. For a few years after the show was cancelled, I boycotted the daily show because I blamed Jon Stewards for its cancellation.
Crossfire was what originally got me excited about politics, I would come home from school everyday to catch the show. I wish they would bring back the original hosts, the same studio and everything. If you enjoyed the original show, you will hate this one.
