(16,133 posts)there is a family of dolphins in the area that can really fish. One of them cruises the seawall while the other swims about 50 ft offshore.
when the inshore one finds a meal it chases it out to the other and they also work visa versa(?). The male is about 12 ft long and huge, female about 10 ft long and big also. The pups seem to stick around for a short time and then go on their own. I've seen pods of up to 8 while I was supposed to be working, but who can not stop to watch them?
while wade fishing I had the male come up behind me and tail smack the water, scared the hell out of me. another time I saw him greyhounding toward me and when he passed I could feel the underwater wake. He was that close.
Another time I took my dad offshore fishing and about 10 miles off of St. Petersburg Beach we came across a 25 member pod that was teaching the pups how to swim, or something. They were carrying the little ones on their backs and tossing them in the air. They were tail walking, doing flips and in short having a blast. We watched for about an hour and then they left. My dad said it was the best thing he'd ever seen on the water.
