The Armed Citizen Project of Florida an offshoot of a Texas group whose website tagline is "Deterring Crime by Empowering Neighborhoods" left leaflets on doorsteps throughout the Sunshine Gardens neighborhood Sunday seeking "volunteers to reduce crime in your neighborhood."
The neighborhood is not known as a high-crime area.
"That's what really cracked me up," said seven-year resident Cathy Rodgers. "I've never felt unsafe in my neighborhood. I just feel like they're preying on people's fears."

Sunshine Gardens is roughly bordered by Lee Road to the north, Edgewater Drive to the west, Interstate 4 to the east and Fairbanks Avenue to the south. On Carlson Street Tuesday, a woman sitting outside doing crossword puzzles was one of two residents who remembered throwing away the flier.
"I'm 89 years old, and the early '60s was the last time we had a problem," said the woman, who did not want to give her name to a reporter. She said that about 50 years ago, a neighbor was shot and wounded during a robbery.
Eight other neighbors interviewed Tuesday mentioned occasional burglaries and property crimes but questioned why they were picked by the group to receive free shotguns.

Get a free gun, too. But only if you eat the whole meal.
