Tehran (AFP) - A senior Iranian official welcomed the "moderate and respectful tone" of US President Barack Obama's speech to the UN General Assembly, as newspapers hailed a new path for the Islamic republic.
"It seems a new climate has been created with the rise to power of a new Iranian government, and all international parties are trying to react to this new climate,"said Deputy Foreign Minister Morteza Sarmadi.
"For example, Barack Obama has tried to use a more moderate and respectful tone," he said, quoted by ISNA news agency.
"But no doubt what's important in foreign policy are actions," he said. If the world's major powers "respect Iran's nuclear rights under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, I think reaching a solution is imaginable."

(30,439 posts)I was told Obama is the same as Bush.
You mean Obama never referred to Iran as part of the "axis of evil"?
Go figure.

(30,439 posts)The same folks that said Obama was determined to attack Syria and then Iran in order to implement PNAC's agenda.
These guys have been proven wrong time and time again in spectacular fashion.
Actually, it isn't me shitting on them.
They've been shitting all over themselves.
And now Iran hails Obama's speech.
Too funny.

(6,785 posts)they're absent because they know these threads are full of this crap that turns it into a flame war.
I've gone into threads numerous times to post something good and decided "Yeah, fuck it." because they were full of this kind of thing.
They're absent because this OP doesn't fit their narrative of Obama being a PNAC operative.
Trust me, they'll be more than happy to visit other threads that fit their narrative so they can engage in nonstop Obama bashing.
Those threads are usually sourced from bogus news sites like RT and contain nothing but conjecture.

It *is* awesome. Cooperation with Iran? Who the hell could predict that? I didn't think we'd see it in my lifetime no matter who was president.

...Obama is a "neo-con": http://www.democraticunderground.com/10023731331#post7
Why would a person who frequently has criticized the President for policies the person sees as wrong want to contribute positively to a thread heavily populated by gloaters like this one. You'll be ridiculed no matter what you post and no matter how sincere you express your joy over Obama doing what in your mind is right; so why bother.

(37,364 posts)Ab-e-ruh it is called. When respect is breached, it is met with retribution in kind or by gaer (shunning). This ovature from Iran is a big deal. If it is the result of sanctions, that should be put aside. The President thus far has struck the right tone for entrance into productive negotiations. A steady hand is essential minus bluster.

(7,321 posts)I'm also astounded that Obama just came right out and make clear our imperialists aims of insuring the free flow of Oil will be maintained, by force if necessary, referencing the Gulf War.
Though I'm completely against that policy in general, that he just came out and said it unambiguously and at the same time - avoiding the bs name calling 'axis of evil', 'regime change' and all that WMD shite delivered by Neo-Cons was refreshing none the less.
that's a change.. policy is the status quo but at least the rhetoric has been significantly modified from previous administration..

(297,154 posts)The Iran section will get the most press, and for understandable reasons: he publicly directed John Kerry to start talking with Iran and President Hassan Rouhani. Thats new and bold and risky, and he should be applauded for it .
. What interested me even more . he said that the danger is not that the United States is these days too aggressively interventionist or imperialist. Rather, he said, the danger (yes, danger) is that a war-weary United States may disengage, leaving a vacuum in global affairs that would be filled by others.
. I kind of liked hearing this, although I doubt most liberals did. But its the right posture. One of Obamas biggest historical jobs is to persuade the American public after Iraq and Afghanistan (as soon as Afghanistan is over, that is) that retreat from a global role, which is not a euphemism for military action but includes active and aggressive diplomacy, would be a grave error .
