Each day I receive two or three calls from this number. Caller ID displays Unknown Name 589-7456. There is never anyone on the line. I tried blocking this number, but because no area code is displayed, it doesn't work. My phone company says without an area code, they can't do anything. We're on the National Do Not Call list, and I have filed two complaints with the FCC.
Does anybody else have this problem, and how did they deal with this? I am sick of being awakened by this call.
Thanks.

(23,738 posts)Don't know if it was a nationwide campaign, but I used to get lots of calls for some sort of cruise giveaway scam that started the call with a FOGHORN, then "this is your captain speaking...".
Haven't gotten one in a while, though, so maybe The Captain retired.

(23,733 posts)and mostly likely the call is computer generated.

(12,629 posts)A scam asking for access to one's Windows computer to fix problems. Since it is not showing up on your caller ID display, just tell your phone company it is coming in from both.
You can usually Google search on these incoming call numbers, and find the info you need.
Good luck!

(5,293 posts)but they always claim to be coming from 201 (Washington DC) with an impossible number following.
I got one of those last week, which hung up quickly when I informed them that my computer has been turned off for the last two weeks
(I was on vacation, with the phone line forwarding to my cell, but they didn't need to know that).

(102,190 posts)but do not answer. Most of them are smart enough not to call more than a couple times, because some out there are actually making $$ filing suits against these companies.
That said, a google shows the following:

(3,600 posts)The first time there was somebody telling me that there was something wrong with my Windows Computer. Since then, it's just dead air. I have blocked the number from both area codes. See if that works.

(4,631 posts)They use social engineering to walk you through downloading a remote control app so they can "fix" your computer. Then they plant time bomb services / apps on it so you have to call them back to "fix" it for a fee.
They used to call here all the time until I set a trap for them by playing stupid and allowing them to "fix" one of my honey pot computers. When they remote in you can get their IP and depending on what level you wish to "repay" them, you can make them wish they never called you.

(16,038 posts)I would call an 800 number and get a dial tone, then dial the number I wanted to call and could program what number came up on caller ID..it's probably easier now..

(32 posts)If your telephone service provider refused to do anything about the caller, then you have only one option left. Pull pranks on the callers and waste their time. That should annoy them.

(32 posts)Just so you have an idea, look up tips to annoy telemarketers at http://www.callercenter.com/articles/14waystoannoytelemarketers.html. Trust me, it's really funny when these callers get annoyed. They end up hanging up. And the best thing about it? They never call back.

(3,600 posts)but I'm still getting called, twice a day. And when I pick up the phone, there is nothing but dead air. No area code is given, so I can't call the number back.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.
