http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-24232896The first computer built entirely with carbon nanotubes has been unveiled, opening the door to a new generation of digital devices.
"Cedric" is only a basic prototype but could be developed into a machine which is smaller, faster and more efficient than today's silicon models.
Nanotubes have long been touted as the heir to silicon's throne, but building a working computer has proven awkward.
The breakthrough by Stanford University engineers is published in Nature.

is whether the eventual commercial product can be made at a similar cost to silicon chips. Carbon is far more costly raw material, but maybe it uses so little in terms of mass that it is not that significant.

(58,349 posts)6. I imagine over time it will be, silicon chips became cheaper as the means to manufacture them
improved.
I see no reason as to why this same dynamic won't occur in regards to nano-technology.

will be similar to that of MIT's battery prototypes which puncture a plate thousands of times with the resulting cone-shaped "pucker" holes increasing surface area in a given space.
The materials science must be a gas.
