5,000 military families to lose food stamp benefits

Maybe we could pay them better? Nah.

The House action that stripped food stamp funding from a massive farm bill would threaten vital assistance for about 5,000 military families, mostly from the junior enlisted ranks, Pentagon officials said Friday.

A Department of Agriculture report last year showed that more than 5,000 of the 48 million Americans receiving Supplementary Nutritional Assistance Program (food stamps) listed their employment status as "active duty military," the Pentagon officials said.

"Military members who receive SNAP tend to be made up of members in junior pay grades with larger than average household sizes," said Navy Lt. Cmdr. Nate Christensen, a Defense Department spokesman.

"Military members normally 'promote out' of the need for additional subsistence benefits, due to the corresponding raises in basic pay and other allowances as one moves to a higher pay grade," Christensen said in an e-mail statement.

The RW talking points don't give it up. Where is the GOP members who are hawks who expects our troops to stay at war. In our senior group we collect food coupons which they can use up to six months after the expiration date, these folks needs our full support of American citizens, we need to get onto our Congress members. Either pay them a living wage in which they can support their families or make sure they have plenty of food stamps.

(Pinboy) -

Last week, Republicans passed a Farm Bill that would kick 170,000 veterans off food

Faced with a looming, losing debt ceiling fight, Tea Party Republicans have turned to veterans and the poor as a sacrifice designed to appease their austerity-starved base.

We've been fighting this battle for a few months, but the stakes are higher than ever this week.

It's critical that you send a letter to your Senator telling them to oppose any legislation that cuts food assistance for veterans and military family members. You can do that here:

http://action.votevets.org/food-assistance

It gets worse...

A Department of Agriculture study last year found that over 5,000 active duty service members receive food assistance. And, in the same year of the study, over $100,000 in food aid was used on military bases.

Hundreds of VoteVets veterans have also told us they're currently receiving assistance. We're going to fight for them on this issue.

Thanks for standing with us in that effort.

All the best,
