Coatesville School Board allows 2 execs to resign after racist texts; public fumes

The Coatesville Area School Board voted Tuesday to accept the resignations of two former senior administrators in a meeting packed with more than a thousand angry parents and taxpayers who demanded the board fire the pair instead.

The vote came after more than three hours of public comment that contained numerous impassioned calls for the board to deny the resignations of former Superintendent Richard Como and Director of Athletics and Activities Jim Donato. The fiery crowd also vocally called for the entire school board to step down throughout the meeting.

The public comment came from a diverse group of parents, taxpayers and district students. Every speaker asked the board to deny the resignations, and most called for the board members to step down.

Following the end of public comment the board abruptly approved the resignations 6-1 before hurriedly exiting the stage as an angry crowd tried to understand what they had just seen. The board appeared to lump all agenda items together and approved them all with a single vote before quickly voting to adjourn.

"I am a single parent with three young children here in Coatesville, and they depend on me to take care of them. So I have had to wrestle with whether or not I was going to come up and speak to you about the truth,” Powell said. “I said a few minutes ago that a little integrity is better than any career, because I absolutely love my job, but I love being a person with integrity even more.”

I missed "the racist texts" but it must have been awful.
