Think that baby’s so cute you could eat it? Turns out you’re right.

It happens to everyone: You see a baby, and feel the fleeting desire to gobble up its little footsie-wootsies or nibble on its teensy earsy-wearseys. So you say something like: “You’re so adorable I could just eat you up” and then have at it, making “Cookie Monster noises” while taking imaginary chunks out of the tot’s cutesy-wootsy little handsy-wandseys.

And then, of course, you feel a little weird, but don’t worry: According to a study, that desire to metaphorically — but not actually, which is a totally different thing called CANNIBALISM — eat infants is tied to their smell.

I guess I know now where the location of my brain damage is, because this has never happened to me. But apparently wanting to eat a baby is normal, claim researchers in Dresden, Germany. Ultimately they believe, this trigger is meant to protect the baby and not actually to eat it.

They isolated baby smells from 2-week-old infants’ pajamas and asked 2 groups of 15 women who had given birth within the past 6 weeks or who had never given birth, to participate.

Scientists found that the smells triggered a response in both groups in an area of the brain that signifies reward.

Even non-parents..... so I think it must be more complicated in terms of triggers than "smell" alone.

something wrong with my brain as well.

I'm not really a baby person, and have never wanted to "eat one up" or even stick their various body parts in my mouth.

Although I will admit that I do find (clean) baby smell pleasant. But I guess I was waiting in a different line when they passed out whatever bonding chemical goes in peoples' brains...

who DON'T have that reaction?? The LAST thing I would ever want to do is take imaginary bites out of a baby. I look at babies and am a tiny bit repulsed - I find them smelly and annoying.

I've said it to my own kids when they were babies. "I could just eat you up." And I've even gone "Nom nom nom" while nibbling on them as they giggle. I had no idea they actually did a study on it. I didn't link it up to smells, but more to the tenderness of baby flesh.
