"The champagne and turkeys on the tables of our gratefull capitalists are very cheap . . .

We paid for them!" -- banner in a photograph of a demonstration by socialists and anarchists in Chicago on Thanksgiving Day, 1884. They marched up and down Prairie Avenue, where the elite of the day like Pullman, Fields, and Palmer lived, playing "The Marseilles" and ringing doorbells. Naturally, no one answered.

p.s. I misspelled "grateful" because that was the way it was actually spelled in the banner in the photo. I think that somehow it adds to its effectiveness.

It is in a PBS documentary called "Chicago: City of the Century," about nineteenth-century Chicago.There was a lot of labor unrest in Chicago at the time.
