Cruz gets attention, gives us nothing in return

The Affordable Care Act – aka “Obamacare” – is anything but perfect. It is not the solution I would have chosen and it’s going to need fixing as time goes on.However, because it will expand health insurance coverage and rein in some of the worst practices of health insurers, it represents progress. We should be reluctant to scrap it without first coming up with something better.

Unfortunately, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and his supporters don’t look at it that way. Cruz made that clear when he staged a fake filibuster – the highlight of which was his reading of “Green Eggs and Ham” – earlier this week.

Cruz’s speech boosted the senator’s celebrity status and raised money for right-wing causes. It did not, however, add substance to the debate about American health care.

In his 21 hours at the podium, Cruz had plenty of time to offer an alternative to Obamacare. He also could have discussed ways to improve the existing law. Instead, he chose to call only for defunding Obamacare.
