The GOP has no interest in moderation

conservative 39 percent
somewhat conservative 37 percent
moderate 18 percent
somewhat liberal 4 percent
very liberal 1 percent

This is from the PPP poll of Republican primary voters. Primary voters tend to be somewhat further from center, but this seems to be awfully lop-sided, even for primary voters. If so, then the Republican party is probably still experiencing a lot of internal pressure to move further right, and almost no internal pressure to moderate. (Hence, Republicans who accidentally says something moderate usually end up apologizing for it.)

It's not news that the Republican party is way conservative. The point is that it is so widely self-consciously extreme. "Moderate" is supposed to be a virtue... "in all things" and such. A popular category. But they want no part of it. So their pendulum is probably still on the back-swing.
