What's it going to take?

As long as Republicans control state legislatures and can gerrymander 90% Republican districts, we are going to be dealing with this kind of craziness. The only way I see it changing is for the crazy conservatives in these places to somehow see the error in their ways and to stop buying into the horrible, destructive snake oil the Republicans are selling. It's not the "average American". It's the hardcore conservatives in these districts. I just don't see what's going make that happen. The horrible George Bush administration couldn't do it. Economic collapse couldn't do it. Will a government shutdown do it? I just don't know.

In 2020 we need to concentrate on states that are traditionally blue. I.E Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and make sure we win control is the state legislatures. Then we can reverse the gerrymanders in those states and take back the house. Short of that I am not sure.

I like that idea for 2020, but there's a lot of destruction to be brought down upon us in the 7 years between now and then. Sadly, it appears to be the case that crazy Republicans will always be crazy and that perhaps nothing will get them to abandon the failed philosophy they blindly support, if as you suggest, the only solution is to work around them but fixing the voting districts after the next census.
