This time, the Republicans got the message. They really, really knew that our Democrats could have crushed them like a chicken bone in a nanny dog's non-locking jaws. We just gave them a little something so they can save face.
Now they will finally respect us, and won't pull the exact same stuff in a few months.
Really.

(25,487 posts)You want the other side walking away thinking they got the better end of the deal.
The GOP got nothing of consequence here.

(116,464 posts)why it shouldn't even be considered. It's not the Democrats' job to help Republicans save face.
The Obamacare "income verification" concession is pure bullshit. People's incomes will be verified at tax time. This is just another way for Repbulicans to whine about people gaining access to health care.
I certainly didn't want to see the country default. Still, there should have been a way to get these fuckers to pass clean bills. The only concessions should have been both a temporary debt ceiling increase and government funding.

(1,456 posts)The difference is that this is NOT a game. Yes, we could have "crushed" them - but by letting them ruin our country. Democrats could have "won", but there wouldn't have been much left for us to govern.
thank dog there are some adults left......

(284 posts)The VP was told to take a backseat on this one. It showed that the solidarity in the party is there to stand firm if it's needed. I just hope it doesn't become commonplace for the Dems to keep Joe doing other things. People will notice.

(27,787 posts)As for what the GOP does next ... they'll create an new crisis of course.
They lost the last debt ceiling fight. They're getting killed in this one. And they'll do it all again next time.
And the media will be slow to notice the pattern.

A Grand Bargaining can certainly still happen.

(27,787 posts)Strange given how this situation seemed to scream out for such predictions.
Apparently that particular outrage widget has lost its umpf.

(34,589 posts)Other than that Obama would call for cuts. Which he did.
Or that Obama would offer cuts. Which he did.
Predicting individual people isn't so hard - they generally do what they say they will do if they have the ability. Predicting the behavior of groups of people is another story - things get complex quickly.
Good luck!

(27,787 posts)... but you can't come out and say it.
Because in reality, you now know its not going to happen.
As for predicting people and groups ... I'll take my chances.
Being right over and over tends to embolden one.
By the way ... my PhD is in Experimental Psych ... so I have a pretty good idea of what kinds of predictions one can (reliably) make about individuals, and of groups.

(34,589 posts)Lovely.
As it happens, two members of my immediate family have PhDs in psych, one in experimental psych I think. Both of them are of the opinion that psychology can tell us little about individuals or groups. They'd like to change that, but the field is not exactly in love with doing hard science.
