Many of them tend to be so hung up on guns, gays, or women having abortions, that they neglect how the GOP has aimed to undo the New Deal since the mid-20th century. As far as why upper-class and rich women, minorities, gays, immigrants, etc. vote Republican, it's mainly for tax breaks.
