work with them every day and most are really good kids. I work in inner city schools

If I had small children, I would encourage this with them as well. All that candy is not good for them anyway, it's the fun of dressing up and trick or treating. Kids love helping others, so it's a win win! I hope this idea spreads!

We gave them some food and some candy

(they only asked for the canned goods, but good deeds should be encouraged).
