One of Kiev’s most well-known subway stops, this station was named after the Golden Gates historical structure.

Designed by a series of architects, Boris and his son Vadim Zhezherin, as well as the artistic architects S.Adamenko and M.Ralko, are responsible for the station’s actual construction. This opulent station has granite floors, large chandeliers with candles-shape light bulbs, columns made of white marble, as well as mosaic art by artists G. Koren and V. Fedko, rounding out the top 5 most beautiful subway stops list.

my guess is the style (with the chandeliers) led you to Russia, then you saw it really wasn't Moscow and looked around the other Russian states and found Kiev...but that's just a guess...am I right?

Oops, I see you found another website...interesting one, too! I hadn't seen that. I was just wandering around and found the Kiev station by chance...kinda fun looking tho, wasn't it?

25. #6 - Athens Metro displays of artifacts unearthed during subway construction
Fri Nov 1, 2013, 06:29 PM
Nov 2013
During the large-scale excavations carried out with state-of- the-art instruments for the long awaited Athens Metro, more incredibly interesting ancient monuments and artifacts have surfaced.

The Metro, although only partly finished, has greatly improved the life of Athenian commuters. But besides providing stress-free transportation, it has also created several underground museums at most of the new stations. At Syntagma, for example, one can admire the stunning cross-section of the ground, illustrating the various eras that once flourished in Athens. There are also cases of ancient objects found during the work on the station.

Many people also are drawn particularly to the turn-of-the-century photographs of Syntagma square, which speak louder than words about the changes the capital of Greece has undergone in its most recent past. At the newer Acropolis station, visitors can admire a different permanent exhibit: copies of the Parthenon's eastern frieze, wonderfully depicting goddess Athena's creation, together with many other of the most important Parthenon sculptures that enrich the British Museum of London.

The station pays homage to the late Melina Mercouri, the well-known actress who - as Minister of Culture - had made it her life s goal to get these so-called Elgin Marbles back to Athens. Melina is shown sitting in front of the Parthenon in a large photograph, while another most impressive picture on display at the station shows hundreds of ancient vases being unearthed as the huge crane moved the earth while digging for the station.

26. #3 - Tile mosaic in Oriente Station, Lisbon Metro
Fri Nov 1, 2013, 06:55 PM
Nov 2013
Oriente station is part of the Gare Intermodal do Oriente (Intermodal Orient Station) which at the of its opening served the World Exhibition of Lisbon – Expo '98. The universality of the theme chosen for this exhibition, "The Oceans", determined its choice for the artistic treatment of the underground railway station. Internationally renowned artists representing the five continents were invited – five Europeans, three Asians, one African, one American and one Australian. From Portugal, Joaquim Rodrigo with a ceramic tile panel named "Praia do Vau"; from Austria, Hundertwasser with a ceramic tile panel named " Submersão Atlântida"; Yayoi Kusama from Japan, also with a ceramic tile panel covering the North wall of the station; from India, Raza with a panel named "Les Océans"; from Iceland, Errö with a ceramic tile panel mixing real and imaginary episodes from History and maritime Mythology; from Argentine, António Ségui in a panel covering the South wall of the station gives us a detailed description of elements related with the sea; Zao Wou Ki from China, conveys through his ceramic tile panel the serenity of the imensity of the oceans; Abdoulaye Konaté from Mali, gives us his understanding of the sea based on his stylistic traditional roots; Sean Scully from Ireland, presents a work with abstract components; from Australia, Arthur Boyd with a ceramic tile panel representing a maritime view in soft tones and subtle strokes; and from Poland, Magdalena Abakanowicz with a large sculpture in brass named "Fish".

Last edited Sat Nov 2, 2013, 09:55 AM - Edit history (1)

I know I'd used "art and subway stations" so I may have modified it to "art and subway murals" or something like that.

My search history shows "lisbon metro," so apparently the search result only gave me the city and I had to do another search to get more details.

I'm constantly tweaking search terms, and after looking at hundreds of images turned up by umpty-ump search tweaks I'm a little spacey about how I got to where I ended up.

The frazzled Columbo detective image I sometimes post is a pretty apt depiction of me after you've put me through the wringer of one of your tough Challenges.

Edited to add: I was right the first time--my search WAS simply on "subway murals." Which gave me this in the results:

Fulbright in Portugal - Muito obrigado
http://stevedoig.com/archives/227

That only gave the city, so I searched on "lisbon metro" for more.

And the design threw me, though in retrospect I am not surprised that it's there because there's an eclectic aesthetic to their public art that from photos I've seen has been expanding and expanding to include any possibility.

I'd have placed the iconography more at Eastern Europe.

Good one this week, I love these when I catch them!

I was in Brussels a year ago and took extensive day trips by train to see great art: Bruges for the Bruges Madonna by Michelangelo, Ghent for the Altarpiece by the Van Eycks, Antwerp for Rubens (!!). And of course Brussels itself for the Musee des Beaux Arts and the Magritte Museum. Wonderful trip.
