Prize-Winning Animation Lets You Fly through 17th Century London

I thought this was amazingly well-done for students:

http://www.openculture.com/2013/11/fly-through-17th-century-london.html

snip-

Six students from De Montfort University have created a stellar 3D representation of 17th century London, as it existed before The Great Fire of 1666. The three-minute video provides a realistic animation of Tudor London, and particularly a section called Pudding Lane where the fire started. As Londonist notes, “Although most of the buildings are conjectural, the students used a realistic street pattern [taken from historical maps] and even included the hanging signs of genuine inns and businesses” mentioned in diaries from the period.

For their efforts, the De Montfort team was awarded first prize in the Off the Map contest, a competition run by The British Library and video game developers GameCity and Crytek.

I was at a presentation a few years back, they had set up 24 screen on a circle around the arena. Then did a fly through of Washington DC modeled in 360. It was like you were in the middle of the model and could look in any direction.

but she sure is having a good time.

There are some other reaction videos on you tube that are really funny. Especially with the roller coaster program.

The attention to detail with the laundry hanging ahead and the market stalls...and then that chilling peek down the alley as the fire is getting going... I just loved it.

Since it would have come out of the sea or the river on the morning sold, or the day before.

The advent of refrigeration is a blessing, but it did change our relationship with food and its sourcing.

John Stow wrote "Survey of London" in which he detailed London as it was at the end of the 16th century, and it was added on to by others as time went on. Just under 70 years after his writing was the fire.
