(34,136 posts)Over two weeks ago I was in a store that had two aisles of Halloween stuff, half an aisle of Thanksgiving stuff, and FOUR aisles of Christmas stuff out.
Last year, some of the stores were still selling Christmas decorations - at serious discounts - at the end of January!
My Mom has it figured - she keeps a card up on her fridge that covers every holiday throughout the year. We should just have generic decorations and leave them up all the time.
Beacool
(30,247 posts)I asked once why and was told that their store is used by other Macy stores as the model that they copy. I'm sure that by the time Christmas is over the employees breath a sigh of relief. Three months of Christmas is too much of a good thing.
csziggy
(34,136 posts)Beacool
(30,247 posts)I asked the saleslady what it was about and she explained it to me. People from other stores come and take notes (every year there's a different theme). Then they go to their respective stores and decorate them accordingly. Can you imagine the poor employees listening to almost 3 months of Christmas music?
I once worked one holiday season at the flagship store in Manhattan. By the time New Year came around I hated The Nutcracker.
csziggy
(34,136 posts)By Black Friday, I'd be completely off the wall. No way I'd last until Christmas!
Beacool
(30,247 posts)In my case I didn't have to listen to it continuously because I wasn't on the main floor. I pity anyone in jewelry, cosmetics, perfume or accessories. The main floor is a circus anyway, but having to listen to The Nutcracker on a loop all day long must have driven them bonkers.

I don't celebrate that holiday and most of the others for the same reasons, including Hallwe'en. Although, when I'm with other people and they start wishing each other "Happy (insert a holiday here)" to each other, I wish them Happy Hallowe'en for all of them.
It's just part of my charm.

(30,247 posts)I have family and friends spread across the globe. I usually write the overseas cards first, then the out of state, then the ones within the state and finally the ones within the town. I also have to hand deliver cards to coworkers, neighbors, the stylist, hail salon, etc. It's never ending. I'm tired just thinking about it. I go through boxes and boxes of cards.
I just depressed myself.

(20,582 posts)are very touched you've thought of them.
Don't drink too much when you're doing them up though, I did that one year and it was a bit of disaster. A friend and I decided to make our own cards - we bought a whole crapload of fancy supplies and she brought over her homemade wine to try while we did them up. It went down really well, but I still think she did something wrong with that wine because the cards looked like they were written by .......... well, people who don't think clearly.

(30,247 posts)I'm old fashioned when it comes to cards. An email won't do it, it's not classy. It seems like an afterthought, that someone couldn't be bothered to write and mail a proper card.

we were using a glue gun to glue glitter on some of them and a Halloween bug flew down and landed in her path, she just glued him down and glittered him nice. But omg, I'm afraid to this day to even see one of those cards, I hope they didn't keep them.
I'm with you, I don't get much out of simple 'Happy Holiday! greetings. Some do put a lot of work into them, adding family pictures and stories and updates - those ones I really enjoy getting, but it's still not quite the same.
I hope you enjoyed your Yuengling and pizza!

(27,670 posts)So for me, Christmas is my version of the ancient natural celebration of the winter solstice, when the days begin to get longer. And if you have kids around who are between the ages of three and seven, it's way more fun.
I love giving presents and love my pretty Christmas tree, pretty colored lights, and the sparkly colored tinsel I put all over my house. I make holiday food, and sample all the great different Winter Ales that are brewed during the solstice season.
IMO, if you can pretty much avoid the commercialism, Christmas rocks.

(1,741 posts)I suspect people who hate Christmas do so because they feel compelled to follow some template of what the holiday should be. Christmas can be taking a walk in the park, going out to a restaurant and movie, doing some family activity, volunteering at a soup kitchen, or whatever you want. Avoid the shopping malls, don't play the radio stations that do Christmas music, change the channel or turn off the tv and read a book when the Christmas specials are airing, and it shouldn't be that hard to avoid the rest of it.

(147 posts)past, never to gain strength enough to be viable again. The only holiday we celebrate is Halloween, which I don't think is a big h Holiday. After first quarter next year my wife and I will be done with our 125 to 130 hour workweeks and will be looking for a place to live in San Lucia, leaving our house to our daughter. Maybe the new place will have holidays that mean something, and then we will celebrate them. But that isn't here. Even in non-holiday season virtually every media minute is filled with commercials from pineapple-mist douche spray to goat's milk bubble bath. I listen to none of it anymore. Can't take it-- Thanksgiving died about 30 years ago; Christmas about ten years after that. If I want to buy Cousins Billie and Babs a present, I'll do it on a non-holiday. Then they might be surprised. However, having said this, I have no problem with those that partake.

As for Christmas, I find it a stressful time, but I enjoy the season. The stressful time comes from having to write over 30 cards and mailing them. Buying gifts and stressing over who wants what. Most women also get stuck with the meal planning and the decorating (other than the outside lights).
