OK, exaggeration. But kids standing and waiting for school buses in the dark is silly. And I don't really hate it as much as I want to use today's GD copycat thread meme to tell everyone to set their clocks back. This is the night to do it.

The sun will be coming up an hour earlier, so it will be lighter in the morning and darker earlier in the afternoon. Your kids will be going to school in daylight and you will be driving home from work in the dark.

I suggest we go to a system were we skip the spring forward but continue to fall back an hour one day a year. I know that would become problematic after a few years but it would all come back around after a while and thag would be a whole day of extra sleep every 24 years.

Also acceptable: keep the fall back, and change the spring forward to spring back.

Personally, I think we should just make every Saturday a fall back (spring back, winter back, whatever). But I understand that solution may be too radical for some.

13. You mean you hate STANDARD TIME
Sat Nov 2, 2013, 07:43 PM
Nov 2013

I hate it, too. I hate it like poison. It makes the winter seem darker and gloomier than it already is.

What most people say when they say they hate daylight savings time is that they hate the changeover. It takes me weeks to reset my clock, which is already out of kilter from delayed sleep syndrome. I get that.

I'd like year round daylight savings time. If parents whine about their kids waiting for the school bus in the dark (which kids in the far north do, anyway), maybe they need to start school an hour later.

Standard time was arbitrary when it was set to please the farmers. Few of us are farmers and most of us would like that hour of sunlight in the afternoon when we start home from work. At least we'd see the sun.

Standard time should be banished to the dustbin of failed experiments.

it's a stupid exercise in futility. Guess what folks, it's getting to be winter and the days are getting shorter and yes, it will be dark at 5pm for a while regardless. And in the summer the days are longer regardless. It's the same 24 hours no matter how much we screw around with the timepieces. My body HATES losing that hour in the spring and LOVES getting it back this weekend. I wish they'd just do away with it altogether. Most of the world doesn't follow it anyway.

21. Mexico does, where I have family
Sat Nov 2, 2013, 07:55 PM
Nov 2013

but when the US changed the date for the switchover a few years ago, Mexico didn't and it caused some confusion about what time I would be arriving that year. And yeah, I understand the longer days, but DST causes the kids waiting for the bus in the dark for the first nine weeks of school and then the whole not getting dark until after 9 PM seems a little extreme. I much prefer Standard Time.

I was on my honeymoon, coming back from Italy, and we were staying for a long weekend in New York. I suggested that we get a drink at a bar and my wife said, "They close in just a few minutes."

"What do you mean 'they close?'" I thought she was messing with me.

I've been all over and I like to drink, but I'm just not much of a bar-patron type. More importantly, I've lived most of my life in Las Vegas. It had never occurred to me that there was a reason for bars to close.
