PORTLAND, Maine (AP) The Democratic challenger to Maine Gov. Paul LePage says he announced he's gay to counter "whisper campaigns, insinuations and push-polls" targeting his personal life.
Six-term Congressman Mike Michaud (MEE'-show) says in an op-ed that he wanted his political foes to know that, in his words, "I am not ashamed of who I am."
Michaud is engaged in a three-way race with LePage, the Republican incumbent, and wealthy independent Eliot Cutler.
It's unknown what impact, if any, Michaud's disclosure might have in a state where voters approved gay marriage a year ago. Michaud supported the measure.

(14,881 posts)It won't impact my vote and I hope he runs a very, very strong campaign. With Cutler running, I'm afraid I'm going to have to do the same thing I did the last time around.
I waited until the last minute, voting much later than usual, to give the Dem every chance. Ultimately, though, I am voting against LePage so whoever has the best chance against him gets my vote. We've got to get that teabagger out of office now...another 4 years of him is more likely to kill us than make us stronger.
