She was born in Frankfurt, Germany 10 months after Hitler took power. Hitler made the children leave the cities during World War II she walked for miles in the winter of 1943 through the snow and got frost bite on her leg. Later with the change of hormones during her pregnancy she had to have her leg amputated with just local anesthetic in order to save her unborn child (me) because that frost bite triggered gangrene. She emigrated with her son to the US made her citizenship and then encouraged me to make mine. She never missed an election and never once voted for a Republican. She died at 51 one years of age from ovarian cancer still encouraging others to vote and work for a liberal platform!!!

(86,330 posts)Thanks for the history. That was a hard time for all involved. I know a woman who is in her late 80s who was at Nuremberg, it was awful for her and her family. I also have relatives who died in the camps.
I do hope your fond memories stay pleasant and refresh you when you bring them to the fore!

(86,330 posts)One of my good friends is the child of a brownshirt, they're not of that frame of mind though.
Most of the warriors of that time are gone now but many of their children are still very much here. Thankfully, the ones I'm acquainted with are pretty cool people.
It is interesting to ponder those times gone by on days when we remember someone who was there whom we actually knew.

(68,918 posts)Thank you for sharing her incredible and courageous story. Having recently lost my high school best friend to ovarian cancer at 43, it is my hope that ovarian cancer awareness soon grabs the national attention that is so often reserved for pink ribbons. Hugs to you today and every day.
