(39,909 posts)One member of the DLCs executive council is none other than Koch Industries, the privately held, Kansas-based oil company whose namesake family members are avatars of the far right, having helped to found archconservative institutions like the Cato Institute and Citizens for a Sound Economy. Not only that, but two Koch executives, Richard Fink and Robert P. Hall III, are listed as members of the board of trustees and the event committee, respectivelymeaning that they gave significantly more than $25,000.

(39,909 posts)The DLC accomplished their Mission,
so they shed their skin like any other reptile.
The "corporatists" funded and supported by them are entrenched in the Democratic Party,
still working to funnel money to the 1%,
and still dismembering New Deal & Great Society Social Programs.

I know what the die-hard party first democrats will say

but I no longer care. Our country and about 80% of her citizens can no longer survive this corporatism.
Unless we get a PROVEN PROGRESSIVE (like Senator Sanders) as a nominee for POTUS (and keep trying to pack OUR congress with real Progressives) then we will have to draft one and STAY UNITED in support of him/her. We know that the corporate media,
the dlc, the "party first" people, etc... will all try to bully us with their familiar scare tactics (look at Nader, etc..).
We have to stay United and give our all to get a proven Progressive elected.
America is Progressive. Yes, the majority do not vote and the r's are trying to make it harder for all of us to vote.
We all need to get people with our same views certified to vote and take them to the polls if necessary.
America IS Progressive, lets prove it.

Obviously we need to get more progressives viable. Do we refuse to play if both candidates suck?

(8,392 posts). . . he has said he intends to drop Bloomberg's appeal of Judge Schira Scheindlin's ruling concerning the stop-and-frisk policy of the NYPD. That's a big deal for those of us who live here!
I also expect we will see a reversal in some of the extreme developer-friendly policies of the Bloomberg administration, which have resulted in a rash of new luxury high-rise towers, the market for which is mostly the international billionaire set, who seek to purchase not a home, but a pied à terre (pied à ciel?), a more or less permanent hotel accommodation for when they decide to play in New York. These towers have the effect of driving housing prices ever higher for those of us who actually want to live here.

(802 posts)...much I can do to get back at the Kochs, and I'm not a customer for much of their corporation's products/services, but I do know Georgia Pacific that they bought some years back. Clearly, anything with GP's name on it, plywood, for example, is off the list, but also Brawny paper towels, Vanity Fair napkins and Dixie (cups and plates) never make it into the grocery cart.

(1,262 posts)I think this is historic in ways. History: The "White Conqueror" has always been racist - subjugating peoples and cultures to their power for centuries in the rise of Europe - and perfected in the New American Century. The British Empire. The Spanish Conquistadors. The Nazi Demons. The Koch Brothers and their money represent the worst impulses of the White European Conqueror ethos. This is a period in history where mass media, technology and science tempt the distorted hubris of powerful people. Harry Belafonte knows exactly who these bastards are.

(9,975 posts)Won't Get Fooled Again Lyrics - Peter Townsend/The Who
We'll be fighting in the streets
With our children at our feet
And the morals that they worship will be gone
And the men who spurred us on
Sit in judgment of all wrong
They decide and the shotgun sings the song
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around me
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
And I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
Don't get fooled again
Change it had to come
We knew it all along
We were liberated from the fall that's all
But the world looks just the same
And history ain't changed
'Cause the banners, they all flown in the last war
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around me
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
And I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
No, no!
I'll move myself and my family aside
If we happen to be left half alive
I'll get all my papers and smile at the sky
For I know that the hypnotized never lie
Do ya?
There's nothing in the street
Looks any different to me
And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye
And the parting on the left
Is now the parting on the right
And the beards have all grown longer overnight
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around me
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
Don't get fooled again
No, no!
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

(32,013 posts)'Which Side Are You On?' is a song written by Florence Reece in 1931. Reece was the wife of Sam Reece, a union organizer for the United Mine Workers in Harlan County, Kentucky. In 1931, the miners of that region were locked in a bitter and violent struggle with the mine owners. In an attempt to intimidate the Reece family, Sheriff J. H. Blair and his men (hired by the mining company) illegally entered their family home in search of Sam Reece. Sam had been warned in advance and escaped, but Florence and their children were terrorized in his place. That night, after the men had gone, Florence wrote the lyrics to 'Which Side Are You On?' on a calendar that hung in the kitchen of her home. She took the melody from a traditional Baptist hymn, 'Lay the Lily Low', or the traditional ballad 'Jack Munro'.
Reece supported a second wave of miner strikes circa 1973, as recounted in the documentary Harlan County USA. She and others perform "Which Side Are You On?" a number of times throughout.
This is Pete Seeger's famous version included in his "Greatest Hits" album released in 1967.
Peter "Pete" Seeger (born May 3, 1919) is an American folk singer and was an iconic figure in the mid-20th century American folk music revival. A fixture on nationwide radio in the 1940s, he also had a string of hit records during the early 1950s as a member of The Weavers, most notably their recording of Lead Belly's 'Goodnight, Irene', which topped the charts for 13 weeks in 1950. Members of The Weavers were blacklisted during the McCarthy Era. In the 1960s, he re-emerged on the public scene as a prominent singer of protest music in support of international disarmament, civil rights, and environmental causes.

(2,574 posts)ago sing in Peekskill. I first saw him perform in 1967 ( and numerous times since). Pete is still kicking ass, still getting the folks singing, still working for peace and justice and the environment. The voice isn't as strong ( I mean he is 94), but he still plays a great banjo.

(813 posts)The Koch Brothers are shameless about using their money to destroy the American political system, along with their allies (Grover Norquist, Club for Growth).
The DLC/Third Way/whatever they call themselves now has been gradually destroying the Democratic Party from within.

PS. Does it matter that I'm white and agree wholeheartedly with Mr. Belafonte? That sounds patronizing to my ear: "Some-of-our-best-progressive-firebrands-are-black". (And Harry is a bit of a firebrand, god bless him! He's earned the right to be angry.)
Decency, moral courage and speaking truth to power should earn our automatic respect and support regardless of race. You would think that so self-evident and clear a truth that it shouldn't need to be remarked on.
But then you haven't read the non-stop stream of offensive racist nonsense that pours into my inbox, regular as clockwork, from people I know from the old neighborhood here in Chicago.
:::sigh:::
I press this magic button on my desk and--ZAP!--racism, homophobia, misogyny and misandry, cultural and religious bigotry of all kinds--instantly eliminated. Now can we discuss the relentless class warfare that is being waged against the working and middle classes of this country, people? (And by people I mean my fellow pigment-challenged, tan-worshiping lovers of rock-&-roll, jazz and hip-hop.)

(2 posts)I bought a Boycott Koch button that I wear every chance I get. It's amazing how many people come up to me in grocery stores and other places to ask who are the Kochs and what other products do they make (there's a picture of toilet paper on the button).
It's kind of pathetic that so many people still don't know who they are or what they do. But I'm happy to talk about it any time someone brings up their name. Then I show them my Buycott and BizzVizz apps, too!
