They will elect a Democratic Governor with a Democratic President first time in 100 years.
Take it to the bank.

(1,375 posts)But it's not like Virginia doesn't elect Democrats on a regular basis, it just that they seem to elect a governor who is in the opposite party of the current president. This is the first time since 1974 that they bucked the trend.

(1,375 posts)I just find the state a little weird with their habit of electing the opposite of whomever won two years prior.
Laelth
(32,017 posts)It's bound to affect them. Richmond was burned to the ground by the government in D.C. It's little wonder they might have a habit of steering in the opposite direction from whatever party controls D.C.
... just a theory.

(6,785 posts)that's actually kind of good news that the difference is that small. The red (rural) areas are what come in first, for the most part, so the Republican is barely winning in areas he should have been able to take with a landslide.

(42,694 posts)Over the past few weeks (and even the past few hours) I've seen posts here saying this was going to be major "change" election that would signal that Virginia is irrevocably moved from red to blue, that McAuliffe was on the way to a 15 point victory, etc etc
In fact Virginia is much what it has been -- a state where there is no party registration and the quality of the candidate determines victory or defeat. This year both candidates were flawed in the eyes of most voters. Fortunately, Cooch was the more deeply flawed candidate. But the results should be eye opening to those that think winning elections in purple states is easy.

(42,694 posts)Going into the election Virginia had two Democratic senators and had voted for Obama in two presidential elections. But it also had a republican state house of delegates, a state senate that is split evenly between the two parties and Republican governor (after two Democrats holding that position in the previous two elections).
Democrats defeated a pair of deeply flawed repub candidates; had the repubs not left the nomination to a convention, they probably would have held the governorship and lt. governorship. As it stands, it looks like they're going to hold the attorney general office, setting up Obenshain to run for governor in 2017.
In short, as happy (and relieved) as I am at McAuliffe's win, the realistic view is that this doesn't signal any kind of sea change.
