As a Southerner... I don't understand what's so attractive about being a douchebag (Chris Christie).

Maybe this is just a cultural thing. I'm from Mississippi. But honestly, I don't understand why so many liberals and Democrats in New Jersey find Chris Christie's douchebag persona appealing. Why? If we had a liberal Democrat down here who acted the way Chris Christie does, I would be turned off by him or her. It certainly wouldn't endear me to a Republican. Is this a regional thing? Is assholery really an appealing quality in New Jersey?

I just don't get it. If a Republican acted like this in Mississippi -- wagging his finger in the faces of voters and screaming at them -- it might actually gives Democrats a chance to WIN the governorship here. It certainly wouldn't be an advantage. But in New Jersey... it seems that, no matter how many awful, far right things Chris Christie does, people will vote for him as long as he maintains his douchebaggishness.

They are assholes in policy and douchebags in terms of the laws they pass... But they aren't elected on personality. They are elected because they have an "R" beside their name.

Chris Christie is being elected solely on the basis of his personality, in spite of the fact that most voters in NJ disagree with his policies. And he's a total, blatant douchebag.

I'm actually from the Mississippi Gulf Coast and New Orleans, but the family's all up in Mississippi. Cultural differences are pretty amazing, aren't they? In MS politicians will do unconscionable things, but they'll ALWAYS ask how's your mamanem and call you Miss and Mr.

I was thinking about that here in the PNW where I live now, just this afternoon, when I smiled and waved a caring front of me and he didn't lift a finger back. In NJ they're in your face and here they're cold and uninvolved. All in all, I like it when people are warm to strangers.

I am from TN and I do think the OP is on to something as to how Christie's demeanor will play around the country. That's generally not the way it's done down here. That being said, I would rather someone be a jerk to my face instead of behind my back.

My college roommate Frank (kind of a pun, now that I think about it) was from New Jersey and he acted in a manner similar to Christie. It was as his mouth didn't have a filter. It was definitely something unusual for me to adjust to, but after a short period I really began to appreciate the straight talk he delivered.

Fast forward 20 years later and I have consciously tried to combine his direct method with a more polite delivery. It works really well. Like anyone else I spend time with, I try to appropriate the good things about them and leave behind the bad.

Sandy helped and I think when you combine that along with him at least giving the appearance of being NOT bagger and he sadly has charisma, plus the media. It doesn't surprise me Jersey votes for him. But 2016 is still far away. And while he won, his party got no coattails.

The baggers (and yeah I include the so called moderate repub or even so called sane repub in this group) don't like to be talked down too, and that is what Christie did to them in his first presidential campaign speech last night.

He will keep doing that trying to show why he is better then baggers and they will continue to not like getting respected. Remember baggers hate being called dumb and they hate not getting the respect they think they deserve even more. Remember the shutdown, they were disrespected. Remember when repubs led by Newt shut down the government it was about being disrespected.

Christie is a bully and it is nature to get ahead by disrespecting everyone. People will turn on him in about a year.

56. Christie is a typical Rambo type litigator/attorney
Wed Nov 6, 2013, 08:45 PM
Nov 2013

I think that most people's problem with Christie lie more with the fact that he is the type of attorney who gives the profession a bad name but still wins. There are some very effective "Rambo" type litigators who make a practice of taking no prisoners and alienating everyone they meet. These lawyers are frowned on but these type of lawyers can be very effective and sometimes get by with their crap because they are effective. In the litigation world, arrogance can be a very effective tool. I think that Christie has been somewhat effective at times and this aura makes him think that he can get by with this crap. Rudy G. had a similar personality and that personality worked to a limited degree.

However, this type of behavior can only work in limited circumstances when people are otherwise satisfy with the job performance of these individuals. Anyone who is not familiar with the track record of one of these jerks would not be able to forgive their arrogance. Rudy G. could not get any traction or support due to his personality and I feel that it is very likely that the same fate awaits Christie.

BTW, I am mainly a transactional lawyer and so I find Rambo lawyers like Christie and Rudy to be stains on the profession.
