Democrats retained control of both the Assembly and the state Senate, with only a few incumbents in the Legislature losing their bids for reelection as voters statewide overwhelmingly reelected Republican Governor Christie.
The legislative campaigns, along with special interest groups, poured a record-breaking amount of money into the legislative races: well over $50 million.
Republicans saw Tuesday as their best opportunity in years to take control of at least the Senate, where Democrats held just a four-seat majority. All 120 seats in the Legislature 40 in the Senate and 80 in the Assembly were up for election.

No Senate seats changed hands. Senate President Stephen Sweeney, D-Gloucester, called the results a decisive and impressive victory.

By late Tuesday, only one Assembly seat, in South Jerseys 1st District, had shifted from Democratic to Republican.
In two other Assembly seats both in the 38th District, which includes Bergenfield, Fair Lawn, Paramus and several other Bergen County towns Democrats appeared at risk of losing in narrow races.
