In his whole re-election campaign, Gov. Chris Christie (R-N.J.) has invited only one sitting out-of-state officeholder to campaign with him: New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez (R), who joined Christie at eight campaign events Monday, including a rally in heavily Hispanic Union City.
In many ways, Martinez is the perfect complement to Christie, amplifying his strengths as a politician. She is relatively young (54) and a moderate who maintains strong popularity in a blue state. She has worked closely with a legislature held by Democrats and bucked her party by taking the Medicaid expansion in Obamacare. Perhaps most importantly, she's almost 2,000 miles removed from the poisonous politics of Washington, D.C.
Her appearances with Christie Monday sparked a buzz in the political press that we could be seeing a preview of the Republican ticket in 2016.
Wearing cowboy boots and speaking in both English and Spanish, Martinez rallied a mostly-Latino crowd in Union City Monday night. Salsa music blared before her appearance onstage, and about 200 voters stood out in the cold for the chance to see Christie, Martinez, and Union City Mayor Brian Stack, a Democrat.

Chris Christie is a gawd!

(11,619 posts)They don't like him anyway. Big business groups are moving aggressively to shut them out of government as Baggers don't give a fuck about business as usual.
Martinez reaches for places where Romney and McCain were weak and has a chance of splitting off some support form a possible run by Hilary Clinton.

(23,931 posts)Count on 2 things from the baggers:
1. the teabaggers will turn out to vote
2. they will vote for republicans, regardless
They're the base of the republican party and they're pretty much forever lost to us. let 'em go.
The danger of a Christie/Martinez ticket is what it puts in play from our column. Christie could blow a hole in the northeast, and Martinez could bring in more of the Hispanic vote for the GOP across the country. We're looking at maybe losing NJ, NY, NM, CO, and NV. That'd be a smart ticket from their perspective.

I don't see Christie getting through the caucuses unless he gets major backing from the media
which is a real possibility.

(11,619 posts)make a difference. It is the same with the Hispanic vote. It is a smart strategy to try and do something in the Republicans weakest area.
A campaign that runs a Hispanic woman isn't gong to put up with some of the stupid stuff that people said in 2012 or 2008 about women or Hispanics. More than anything else, it is also a sign that the Tea Party is being shown the door.
