I think he is brilliant, masterful, FAST, and incredibly insightful. Watch and enjoy.
He takes them apart and they don't even really realize it.

Fun to watch Brand eviscerate them and they're too stupid to even know it's happening.

(62,270 posts)I suspected that Brand wasn't serious about this. The talking points are grand, but I am increasingly unimpressed by Brand's performance. We'll see how he does in the future.
I also wasn't pleased by his sexing up the woman commentators, then mocking them as they "played along." It was totally debasing. Yes, he was flirtatious, and yes they played along, even if they clearly looked uninspired, they played along for the "showmanship." It was disgusting.
Goddamnit Brand. Do better. This shit isn't a joke. You know the ideology, live it.

(29,257 posts)He does not take them seriously because the message is that they are not to be taken seriously.
We cannot fight with guns and bullets, we cannot even fight with votes.
The "NEWS" is supposed to have a mantle of seriousness and gravity. He rips it off them with his condescending mocking.
I think it was perfect.
As for "sexing" up the women, the point he was making was that they have already sexed themselves up -he did not do that. That is what THEY have chosen as their medium. He merely points it out and laughs at it.
He is the jester. He is sublime. And yes, I think he is serious as hell. He has chosen his role well.

(62,270 posts)And he used his flirtatious abilities. Frankly, I was swooning for him even in this video and even being a fan of him. It's cute. It's adorable. It makes you swoon. I think he used that against the women commentators. I don't know them, they might be shit journalists, but if I was one of them in front of Brand, the body language would've controlled me.
You act as if his behavior is new, no, that's who he is and has been. I frankly think he lacked introspection. He is, as others are, part of the Spectacle, and he should've realized it. It was perfectly possible for him to relate his views without triggering those emotional responses. Had he done that my respect would've been amplified 100x, but no, he kept playing the game.
I predict Brand's politics will have zero effect in the coming days, months, years. It's him, in my opinion, making a statement that returns the most money from his efforts. If he was serious he'd drop the bullshit macho-beta-style persona.
And he'd refer to Manning as Chelsea as she wishes.

(29,257 posts)You know, I have spent many years out of the US and it leaves large gaps in my cultural literacy, so no, I did not know him.
You make interesting points. Is he part of the spectacle? Is he playing part of it so that he can dominate it? Is he poking fun? Is he introspective but trying to appear flippant? I find it very hard to say.
What I am certain of is that he is, as you say, an incredibly magnetic figure with a unique ability to warp reality around him or at least dominate a room with his powerful presence.
As for the "bullshit macho-beta style", I can't really say that I understand what you mean precisely. But even if I did, I would not necessarily agree that keeping it or dropping it reflects directly on the issue of whether he is serious or not. Like I said, I think he has a game plan and he is playing the role of the mythic Trickster, ala Loki or the Fox or Coyote. As such, being sexual is part of it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trickster
The trickster deity breaks the rules of the gods or nature, sometimes maliciously (for example, Loki) but usually with ultimately positive effects (though the trickster's initial intentions may have been either positive or negative). Often, the bending/breaking of rules takes the form of tricks (e.g. Eris) or thievery. Tricksters can be cunning or foolish or both; they are often funny even when considered sacred or performing important cultural tasks. An example of this is the sacred Iktomi, whose role is to play tricks and games and by doing so raises awareness and acts as an equalizer.

(62,270 posts)We'll see in a very short period of time whether it's a tour thing o ra revolution thing.
That's what I love so much about it.
If he wants revolution he can get it.
He won't. I'm predicting it now.
edit: referring to Chelsea as Bradley is how I've come to this conclusion. It's not an error, Brand knows better, his internal conflicts revealed themselves. Watch and see Bonobo. There will be nothing. Trust it. Nothing will happen. I do not exaggerate. Nothing. Absolutely nothing will happen. I'd bet money but I don't believe in money.
Bonobo
(29,257 posts)How do you figure that?
He may play at being a god, but he is not one.
Either his spark will ignite or it won't.
Either way, all he can do is try.
By the way, I do enjoy speaking civilly with you on a topic.
joshcryer
(62,270 posts)He can form a group to bring revolution. This is unquestionable. Give me a couple of million dollars, I will change the world.
The metric: His efforts will make him more money than he spends. Watch carefully, it'll be so obvious. Don't fawn. Watch.

(28,552 posts)... I thought he was a pretty boy lightweight actor.
After reading an interview with him I realized he's a genius of a sort.
It's so funny, in America (in the rest of the world, or the rest of the "developed" world or????) you ARE what you LOOK LIKE. I attribute this somewhat to TV and movies where certain characters almost always look a certain way. And I am as guilty of it as anyone.
But in the real world you can't tell much of anything about a person's mind by looking at them.

(15,435 posts)My grandson sent me this link a couple of weeks ago. We talk politics all the time. I thanked him for the link, THEN told him to get his ASS in gear and go out and DO SOMETHING to change what's going on! He currently attends FSU so I told him he has thousands of people around him, so get to work! We have a very, very close relationship and he was my first grandchild!
Hope this still works.
