General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWhy, to me, what CBS did with its conservative audience pandering big lie is really huge news.
It reaffirms that which most of us here probably realized for a long time - certainly since the (election*) of Dubya the first time. The fix is in.....nothing that is reported on television news or in print can be trusted due to manipulation by the corporate right wing owners to distort reality. It is the result of the media consolidation, the demise of the fairness doctrine, and an outcome of the Citizens United ruling.
We've all observed it for years from the stacking of "news" programs by right wingers (today, I noticed on NPR's Diane Rehm show, it pretty much was Fox, Bloomberg - often Politico - but never, every anything even remotely balancing from the left.)
Sadly, TV and print news is how most of America gets its news. This is a monstrous problem...the right wing echo chamber is now all-encompassing and only those of us who know enough to seek alternate news sources stand a chance at the truth.
All the lines have been crossed, and trust is now lost. And I don't see a way for them to get it back.

Really, CBS's pettiness towards Dan Rather and this recent 60 Minutes lie shows they have integrity similar to FOX.

(1,295 posts)a report discussed on NPR about a month ago revealed that most "liberal" journalist won't report the TRUTH because they are unwilling to take the Reich Wing barrage of hate they will have to endure.
That and their employers not so tacitly make it clear that the news is business and business is in the business of making $.
There is no such thing as the "liberal" media.

Mary Matalin
Matalin has served Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush. Most recently, she joined the Bush/Cheney administration in the first term as Assistant to the President and Counselor to the Vice President. In that capacity, she preformed as senior advisor on major initiatives, including national security, homeland security, energy, economic growth and corporate governance policies. She oversaw the Vice Presidents political and communications departments, advancing administration policies from the Middle East, Europe and across America to Capitol Hill.
Before joining the Bush/Cheney White House, Matalin hosted CNNs critically acclaimed debate show, Crossfire. Matalin was also a former founding co-host of the Washington based CNBC political weeknight talk show, Equal Time. Today, she can be seen weekly as a CNN Political Contributor on such shows as The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer and John King USA. Matalin can also be heard weekly along with co-host Arianna Huffington on the nationally-syndicated radio program Both Sides Now, which is currently broadcast on over 100 radio stations across the country. The show - being called the only 2 sides/ 2 women national talk program around - represents a departure from traditional news talk product which is dominated across the U.S. by male voices.
In addition to her successful careers in politics, television, and radio, Matalin is also a widely read, respected and acclaimed author and serves as Editor at Large for Threshold Editions, a conservative publishing imprint at Simon & Schuster that has published authors from Vice President Dick Cheney to Karl Rove to Glenn Beck. Matalin, along with her husband James Carville, co-authored the best-selling political campaign book Alls Fair: Love, War and Running for President. Her most recent book, Letters to My Daughters was named a Book of the Month Club selection as well as The New York Times and The Washington Post best-seller lists. Letters to My Daughters was also selected for a condensed version by Readers Digest.[/b[

Right wing forces in America cannot resist the temptation of this all powerful, potentially world dominating military. They have dreams of achieving what they failed to accomplish last century.
We simply cannot have a democracy without a balanced, fair TV media and free press. Of course, this is the objectiveto do away with the democracy.

(192 posts)Network and cable news are corporate toadies and pander to interests other than the American people. They all have heavy biases, mainly to the right, so the news we get is more opinion pieces than actual news. If you want to at least get a somewhat less biased, actual news from a different perspective, watch, BBC, CBC, Al Jazeera <which ATT Uverse will not allow on their stations>.

(17,656 posts)At least.
It became clear to me as the noon day sky over the Mediterranean Sea in October of 1983, after President Ronald Reagun sent the Marines into Lebanon and 244 Marines and Navy sailors were killed in just 1 day -- the largest loss of life suffered by the Marine Corps since the invasion of Iwo Jima during World War II -- and then Reagan invaded the tiny island of Grenada 2 days later, as he "wagged the dog" . . . and wound up taking the worst foreign policy blunder committed in more than a dozen years from right off of the front pages of the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Los Angeles Times!!!
CBS and NBC barely covered the news of how most of those Marines that had been killed in October had been buried by over 200 tons of the battalion headquarters building when it was bombed by a terrorist that month in 1983.
However, they both provided daily coverage of VP Bush in 1983, wearing a helmet and a flak jacket, when he was in Lebanon later that year talking to reporters about how that debacle happened, and all those favorable reports of ol' George Bush "getting r done" were carried on a daily basis for several weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas that year.
So, you are absolutely right, my friend, the mainstream media can NOT be trusted to tell the American people the truth.
Those halycon days of the news being brought to us by honest men like Walter Cronkite, who was voted as the "most trusted man in America" in 1970, are long gone.
