Africanized bees kill pit bull, injure another in Florida neighborhood

A huge swarm of Africanized bees flew out the attic of a Florida home and stung a pit bull to death, police said.

Another pit bull was left in critical condition, NBC station WFLA of St. Petersburg reported.
The incident occurred Thursday morning when the two dogs started barking outside the home. Bee experts said nearly 100,000 killer bees were in the attic, WFLA reported.

A man who cared for the two strays told WFLA that the bees “were crawling all over them.” One named Boss was killed and another was stung more than 100 times.

Africanized bees are hybrids of African honeybees and Western honeybee species. The homeowners told WFLA that they didn’t know the bees were there.

"I wouldn't put the community in danger like this. I wouldn't," homeowner Shirley Burns said in a WFLA video.
A bee expert removed the hive Thursday night, WFLA reported.

And I used to be scared that Bloody Bones was in my Grandmama's attic. This is infinitely worse.

As the climate gets warmer, the movement of a lot of plants and animals will spread to cooler climes.
In addition, a lot of these groups are adapting some to handle a different environment.

By the time the southern outsized bugs and poisonous critters are up here, I'll likely be gone anyway. Maine is still a long way off for them and we still manage to get 15 below most winters here on the coast. Adaptable as they are, they just can't survive those kinds of temps...

Another responsible home owner who didn't take care of their home - from bees to poltergeists...well I just don't think some people should be able to own a home if they don't know what's in the attic.

My dad raised bees for a spell, and always kept them in a safe that had a biometric lock and only the local sheriff could open between 5-6pm every other saturday with a three month advanced notice.

Meh, maybe I just need a Snicker's bar and some coffee

I am not clear what about 100,000 hybrid bees killing a dog is 'rolling on the ground funny'. Or the fact that Africanized bees are a serious threat where they are found and can easily swarm and kill people. Maybe I am the one that needs the coffee, but just not seeing the humor here.

We did use it, but nobody went up there regularly. It could happen since they swarm and it could have taken a relatively short time to reach that number.

There was also an attic in my maternal Grandmama's house. It was built in the 1930s. NOBODY went up there unless it was an extreme emergency. We were told that there was no telling what critters or other things were in it.

The only time I ever heard of somebody going up there was in the 1990s when a fire had started on the roof and they wanted to make sure it wasn't smoldering in the attic. We never ever attempted to break that rule. Attics held much more terror than other spaces in our minds.

The house was also raised on short brick columns. We were warned not to go too far under the house because of snakes. That was a proven threat because they were seen every now and then slithering out. However, when we wanted to escape the adults, that's exactly where we went because they wouldn't follow us. They'd stand at the edge and holler at us.

Perhaps you should turn off the computer and get some fresh air.

And I'm not laughing or rolling on the floor.
