Yes, dumps are unsightly and smell bad. But burning garbage releases plenty of Co2 and god knows what other chemicals.

What we need is an institutionalized composting system to remove organic waste from landfills. Looks like 60 or 70% of our solid waste is biological in origin: http://www.epa.gov/epawaste/nonhaz/municipal/index.htm

Burning is not the answer to either our energy problem or our waste problem.
