(2,596 posts)I've had a bit of a fascination with the WW2 minesweepers growing up in St. Louis, where the USS Inaugural was tied up until her owner had her scuttled during the 1993 flood.
I'm working on a scale R/C model of the Inaugural.
Thanks.

(83,728 posts)I have a picture of him in front of the ship, yet I don't know the name.
He has an album of the ports they visited, yet never recalled seeing the name of the sweeper. I will ask when I visit, yet he is suffering from Alzheimer and Dementia, I doubt that he will remember.

(2,596 posts)The easiest, if you find the number of the ship in any photo it is very easy to track down.
The most complete is to go to the National Records Center in Overland, MO and with his SSN you can get a complete service record.
There are various websites with ship's histories, but my quick check just found most of them are down or moved.
My wife wants to do this for her grandfather, but we haven't taken the time yet.

(15,800 posts)A few years back I got a phone call from my brother. He informed me that he was calling from the middle of Puget Sound, where he was helping to "test drive" an old mine sweeper that he'd been hired to re-fit as, of all things, a high-priced charter fishing boat. A group of investors had purchased a few of the mothballed vessels with a view to having them thus repurposed. When I went to visit, I got to tour the one he was just finishing. I believe they are now chartered out of Alaska.

(53,661 posts)He had a pair which he called 'Before and After.'
The Before is of him sitting in a chair, legs crossed with a cigar in hand, being 1930s style cool in his San Francisco townhouse.
The After is one taking a rest building airfields in the Pacific, where he is somewhat bedraggled. He was in the Seabees.
I always thought he looked like Cary Grant myself. Your Dad looks like a very kind person.
If I ever figure out to reset my scanner, I'll send the pictures. There's even one of him standing by a small plane, supposedly holding up a painted lady's bosom on the nose of the plane.
Thanks for sharing this one with us!

(83,728 posts)That does not always happen anymore.
I was trying to find the picture of him in uniform, beside the minesweeper. Alas, I could not. He was a handsome man, very dark hair. That was part of the Indian Heritage. My sister knows the tribe, I can't remember it. She takes after him, I was blonde and more from the German and Swiss side of the family.
Yes please send me pics when your scanner is up and running. I would love to see the young Cary Grant.
Your Dad sounds like he was a bit of a character, holding the pic of a painted lady's bosom on the nose of the plane. Bless his soul~
