(25,704 posts)I was driving a lot today and all I heard about was that the US military is sending a carrier battle group and some marines. That will not help in any real fashion. I'm sure they appreciate the gesture but much of the Philippines is a third world country spread across many islands. They need heavy equipment and trained operators. They need tens of thousands of medical personnel. They need a million things I can't think of but they do not have because they are too poor.
This just sucks and I don't see how they are going to be helped. Remember the world poured into Haiti after the earthquake and it did no good.

(26,549 posts)But yes, they will quickly move on to needing the things you listed.
No, they need one thing. Money. In local hands.
You lament what happened in Haiti, but a lot of that happened because people donated their old stuff instead of cash. People in disaster areas do not need an old cocktail dress and 4" heels.
Many of the groups that did receive money did a great job of syphoning off donations to pay themselves nicely. Others are global charities with a lot of overhead burning through donations on the way to the disaster area.
So if you want to help, try to find the most local charity you can, and give them cash. My personal recommendation is the Philippine chapter of the Red Cross, but that's mostly because I can't easily research Philippine charities.
They'll be able to use the money to buy the stuff they need, when they need it.

(268,869 posts)Way more than some of the bogus charities.
Sadly the vultures are also descending to profit from people's misery.

If nothing else, they can help evacuate people from the more isolated areas...

(16,254 posts)vehicles, boats, etc.? I know they towed a lot of it out to sea for the tsunami. What would they do with all those bodies? Beyond belief.

(9,766 posts)They will bury the bodes in mass graves, but I have no idea what they'll do with all of the debris.
Devastating.
