Neat trick. Death of spy found naked in padlocked gym bag in bathtub was an accident

A spy whose naked, decomposing body was found inside a padlocked gym bag at his apartment likely died in an accident with no one else involved, British police said Wednesday — a tentative conclusion that is unlikely to calm conspiracy theories around the bizarre case.

Metropolitan Police Deputy Assistant Commissioner Martin Hewitt said the death of Gareth Williams, whose remains were found inside a bag in his bathtub in August 2010, was “most probably” an accident.

But he conceded that the facts could not be established beyond a reasonable doubt, and Williams’ family members said they still believe he was killed.

The police verdict also disagrees with a coroner’s inquest, which concluded last year that Williams had probably been killed by another person in a “criminally meditated act.”

I suppose that the death itself might still be accidental, with someone subsequently stuffing the corpse into the bag, but that's a bit of a stretch.

This is flimsier cover-up than the kid in Georgia who supposedly committed suicide in an upright wrestling mat...At least Britain can claim it's need-to-know spy stuff/national security, but the one in Georgia was flat-out incompetence/racism...

So it is not impossible.

But it certainly sounds... odd.

He was a claustrophiliac. A person who is sexually-aroused by being trapped in small spaces; it's a fetish closely related to certain types of bondage and asphyxiation-play. He had several books on the subject and was a frequent visitor to websites on this fetish.

Ask yourself this: If the only way you could get off sexually was to be padlocked inside a duffel bag, do you think you might figure out how to padlock yourself inside a duffel bag?

In case you want to know way more about claustrophilia and its suspected connection to Gareth Williams: http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2012/04/30/did-claustrophilia-kill-u-k-spy-gareth-williams.html
