A tea party lawmaker cited the Bible during a speech Wednesday on the House floor criticizing the Obama administration for its treatment of Israel.
There are many who have been aware of Scripture, and it has often been a guide in our relations with Israel, said Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX). Some of us believe that the Bible is accurate. Certainly, so many prophesies have been fulfilled, and if that is true, this administration, unless they can find a verse that accurately says that those who betray Israel will be blessed, then this country is being dug in a deeper hole by this administration and its betrayals of Israels trust and Israels friendship.
Gohmert said President Barack Obama had urged Israel to enter into a nuclear nonproliferation treaty with other Middle Eastern nations, which he said would require the nation to disclose and give up its undeclared nuclear weapons.
This was viewed and discussed as being the first time in peoples memory when the United States, by and through its administration the Obama administration had taken action that was very adverse to Israel and the international community, and particularly in the U.N., Gohmert told lawmakers. Normally we did not side with Israels enemies.
He warned that pulling away from Israel had provoked its enemies and left it vulnerable to attack by Iran.

The U.S. has NEVER used the Bible to define its relationship with Israel. That is pure fantasy.
Our relationship with Israel since it's creation in 1948 has been defined by two things; pure self-interest and the power of the pro-Israel lobby, PERIOD.
I do not doubt there have been members of Congress that have voted for appropriations, etc. based on their read of the Bible. But Congress doesn't define foreign policy. It shapes it by ratifying treaties (Senate) and approving expenditures but the Executive Branch is responsible for foreign policy.
I would NOT want our foreign policy to be guided by what Congress or an Administration interpret in the Bible. Foreign policy should be governed primarily by what is in our national strategic and tactical interests and our values (e.g. foreign aid, etc.). It should never be shaped by something we read in the Bible. I say that as a Christian.

(144,945 posts)A number of right wing types support Israel because they think that the existence of the State of Israel is necessary for the second coming. According to the Maddow show, W used to consult with these people. http://global.christianpost.com/news/george-w-bush-administration-was-trying-to-cause-end-of-the-world-with-apocalyptic-christians-claims-msnbc-host-rachel-maddow-108556/
Citing a 2004 Village Voice article by Rick Perlstein, Maddow pointed out that the Jews for Jesus group was one of two Christian groups that consulted with the Bush administration's Near East and North African Affairs director Elliott Abrams about foreign policy in the Middle East using the Bible as a guide to discuss matters concerning Israel.
It reads in part:
Claiming to be "the Christian Voice in the Nation's Capital," the members vociferously oppose the idea of a Palestinian state. They fear an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza might enable just that, and they object on the grounds that all of Old Testament Israel belongs to the Jews. Until Israel is intact and Solomon's temple rebuilt, they believe, Christ won't come back to earth.
Abrams attempted to assuage their concerns by stating that "the Gaza Strip had no significant biblical influence such as Joseph's tomb or Rachel's tomb and therefore is a piece of land that can be sacrificed for the cause of peace."
Three weeks after the confab, President George W. Bush reversed long-standing U.S. policy, endorsing Israeli sovereignty over parts of the West Bank in exchange for Israel's disengagement from the Gaza Strip.
Gohmert is one of the nut cases who believe that a state of Israel must exist for the second coming.

(144,945 posts)As a Jew, I am aware that a number of right wing types support the State of Israel due to their belief that such a state is necessary for the second coming. Rachel Maddow discussed this the other night. This is from the article I cited above.
"It was more than just news, it was actually kind of scary that the George W. Bush administration, when we learned how policy toward that part of the world was being made inside the Bush White House," said Maddow.
"These groups wanted the Bush administration to make sure that the borders of Israel lined up exactly with what they thought the Bible said it needed to be in order to bring about the apocalypse," she explained.
In light of the history of the group with the Bush administration, Maddow said it was not surprising that he would be speaking at the group's fundraising event.
"It's an amazing thing," Maddow said. "I mean, everybody's religious beliefs are their own, and by definition in this country, nobody's religious beliefs are better than anyone else's."

(144,945 posts)I will give Louie a shiny new nickel if he would read Genesis 12 out loud to me. Especially the part when Abram got to Egypt and he made his beautiful wife lie and say that she was his sister so that the Pharaoh would take her into his house and give Abram lots of cool stuff, you know, like sheep, and oxen, and he asses, and menservants, and maidservants, and she asses, and camels.
And God rewarded Abram for his lies and brought plagues on the Egyptians for believing the lies. Thats the Fox News marketing plan.
So, Abram whored out his wife for livestock. And thats where the Republicans got their economic plan.
Thanks for that Genesis 12 reminder, Louie.
