High school brings in Christian misogynist to lecture students about dating, students shut him down
Texas students didn't take too kindly to a "dating expert" who believes "dateable girls know how to shut up"
Katie Mcdonough - http://www.salon.com/2013/11/14/high_school_brings_in_christian_misogynist_to_lecture_students_about_dating_students_shut_him_down/
He also illustrates his advice ... And puts his advice into pithy one-liners, telling girls that, If you go too tight, too short, or too low-cut [with the clothes you wear], you are no longer a person to get to know but an object to use.
This is terrible advice that no one should listen to. And yet a high school in Texas actually invited Lookadoo to share his retrograde and deeply misogynistic Christian complementarian views with its students.
But they werent having it. Students at Richardson High School swarmed Lookadoo after his talk to call him out for being a sexist jerk; they also took to Twitter to further ridicule him (and their school ...........

there is a pay off for women too. hence, so many women that support this bullshit.
it hurts all of us.
we can ridicule this man. but we see it daily on du and in our world.

(29,414 posts)Dallas is known for being the home of the First Baptist Church and a much larger Evangelical population than the other major cities of Texas. I'm happy to see the kids better educated than the adults charged with "educating" them to begin with!
I hope this story remains kicked. DU needs to see it
seabeyond
(110,159 posts)also be huge backlash. you are not too far away, from what i understand. i know you know that it is not a backward society by any means. stuff like this may get thru, but it is not embraced. i do not know a single teacher that would accept this kind of thinking. my boys going thru school, even with conservative teachers, have been allowed to think and express outside of the box, with respect....
kentauros
(29,414 posts)or not without personally confronting them. Her assistant and other teacher friends would likely go directly to administration if such an ass was foisted upon them.
I live in Houston, and our diversity tends to make me think that most of the other major cities of Texas are similarly diverse. It's just too bad the rest of DU hangs onto their stereotypes about us, even when encouraging stories like this come around.
seabeyond
(110,159 posts)i am not a fan of texas. i am a califorian so the last couple decades has been challenging. but... i also am able to appreciate and value the good. and i am also honest enough to recognize facts... reality, that we live and no need to make them less than what they are.
we create.
kentauros
(29,414 posts)but I do think we have much more good going for us than most are willing to realize or search for. I think the same is true for any other area labeled as "red"
If you get a chance to travel around in Texas, at least visit Austin and San Antonio. Houston's a long drive from Amarillo, yet it could be worth it if you come during one of the festivals or other events and stay a few days.
seabeyond
(110,159 posts)we hit san antonio, the bay, thru austin to see the college and houston on out.
we had a blast. i had been wanting to travel south for a while. loved it. not my weather. but ya, diversity.
i think it has been sucha huge lesson for my boys. i married a repug. everyone in my family are repugs. but, my kids were raised liberal. so, they had to learn how to speak up, express their opinion and ideas but HAD TO do it respectfully, so they would be allowed and could be heard.
it also allows them to see the good and bad in both.
i was worried about raising kids in such a dominant repug/fundamental environment. 18 yrs later, i am thrilled i did.
kentauros
(29,414 posts)And that's probably the most important thing. My father is still staunchly republican, even as my mother is "independent" (I think think she probably votes for some repubs, rationalizing the "voting for the one right for the job" kind of thinking.) Yet, they raised us to be well-educated and independent in what we wanted to do. I think we all have multiple degrees due to the first choices not being our best ones.
I'm glad I've stayed in Houston. If I hadn't I would be best-friends with a Palestinian-American, live in a predominantly Jewish part of town, and regularly visit the Middle Eastern and Indian areas for cuisine, shopping, and generally just appreciating such a diverse world we all live in

Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: I guess I, too, am a misogynistic asshole because I agree with the points in the post.
Juror #3 voted to HIDE IT and said: No explanation given
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Looks like Pab's alert stalker is still on the job. The phrasing is indelicate but the point is valid--young women should not be taught that their self-worth is entirely a matter of their ability to attract sexual attention from men.
Juror #5 voted to HIDE IT and said: No explanation given
Juror #6 voted to HIDE IT and said: Geez. I'm getting more than tired of this man's hatred of women on this board. It's been evident in a LOT of his posts. Especially this one, which is quite sexist in its entirety. Pab is doing NOTHING to remedy this, either.

A girl who feels the need to dress hyper-sexualized to attract a boy needs a good dose of self-esteem. All she is going to attract that way is a bunch of stupid, horny boys who are not worth their time or effort.
AtheistCrusader
(33,982 posts)1. Define 'hyper-sexualized'.
2. Establish that any particular manner of dress is necessarily intended to attract a boy in the first place.
3. Establish that what you might call 'hyper-sexualized' is the same meaning to an individual, while selecting what to wear.
4. Why are you singling out girls/manner of dress. Do boys not make clothing decisions based on various factors, same as girls?
5. Establish that a girl, if we are going to focus on girls here for some reason, should assume the negative connotations you just stated, even if she does desire physical relationships with 'stupid, horny boys'? Why do you assume this is a negative?
There are more issues, but that might make for a good starter convo.

(9,612 posts)What the asshole "speaker" was saying, and probably the only true thing he was saying, is that girls shouldn't feel the need to dress in a provocative manner to attract boys.
Now if a girl wants to dress that way, that's her option. If it makes her feel empowered, good. But a girl shouldn't feel the need to dress like that. There are better ways to get a boy, and the boys they will get that way are more worth it.

Please define and support that claim. Then establish that it is in any way a negative.
"And the boys that style attracts are not the kind of boys worth dating."
Why? On what assumption? And if it were true, why do you assume girls cannot discriminate between your hypothetical categories?
Assuming your first premise has any merit at all (A bridge beyond any assumption I would make) on what do you base this? Are males that only seek to date females they find unattractive the only relationships with merit?
I didn't know boys are mindless robotic sex hounds. I also didn't know that sexual contact of any kind precludes a meaningful relationship in any other dimension.

(19,288 posts)Recognised this for what it is. Conservative patronizing of women and the assignment of guilt, and shame on the female for the biology of attraction. It goes back to Eve and the apple, tempting Adam into sinning against his ignorance with knowledge. Carnal knowledge. I'm sick of it.
That being said, the power of sexual attraction is enormous. Like a giant magnet, the urge to merge, is an animal instinct. In our effort to suppress everything educational and informative about sex from girls, so they won't experiment from knowledge, they barely acknowledge that they do have the power to attract. I say make them aware but don't slut shame any one. Man, some of the stuff my own mom said to me in anger would curl your hair.
Both young men and women need to have respect for each other. Guys need guidance on boundries and where not to cross.
I was about 12 or 13 in 1970. I remember being impressed back in Jr high by a magazine article detailing a court account of a rape trial. And the defense asked those questions, that are not supposed to be asked now, about how late was the hour, how dark was it outside when you went walking, how short was your skirt, how high were your heels, do you have a boyfriend, how far have you let him go, were you a virgin, how many partners do you think you've had, did you like it, did you know the perp, what is your reputation???? I took some liberty here but I felt like that victim got raped twice. I don't think trials are allowed to take this tract, these days. I hope we have come that far.
Meanwhile I hope we are teaching our daughters and grand daughters to have self esteem and dignity so they won't let some yayhoo bully them into sex they are not ready for.
