Chicago Cardinal Pens Anti–Marriage Equality Letter

Those attending services at Roman Catholic churches in the Chicago archdiocese Sunday will get an anti–marriage equality letter in their church bulletin.

Cardinal Francis George, who heads the Chicago archdiocese, has asked for the letter to be distributed throughout the region, reports Chicago TV station WMAQ. This comes after the head of another Illinois Catholic archdiocese, in Springfield, announced plans for a service of prayer and exorcism Wednesday, the day Gov. Pat Quinn is scheduled to sign the Illinois marriage equality bill into law.

“There will be consequences for the Church and society that will become clearer as the law is used to sue for discrimination,” the cardinal’s letter reads in part, according to WMAQ. He adds, “The law has made some gays and lesbians happy, and that is not a bad thing in itself. The law, however, is bad law because it will contribute over the long run to the further dissolution of marriage and family life, which are the bedrock of any society.”

Despite your obvious charm, I'll answer you.

It's a foolish letter on a civil statute, certainly outside his competence, and is likely to be less than effective in whatever goal he has in mind. He has no business - or any particular expertise - to comment on it.

The "exorcism" planned by the Springfield bishop is another imbecilic stunt which was injected into this report. (Sorry to remind you of the importance of primary sources again.) That story was discussed two days ago in the Religion Group earlier this week. You'll have no trouble finding it.

I note you did not share your opinion of the content of his letter. Which is what you were asked about. You were not asked if you thought it would be effective, but if you agree with it.
You claimed the linked interview was 'hair on fire' but you refuse to explain what you mean. It sounds to me like you think the Advocate is too gay for Sunday.
