a man's beliefs, even if they did not agree with their own. Sadly, such appears to have disappeared.

Franklin Pierce was the first president to affirm his oath, in 1853, rather than swear it. He also put his hand on a book of laws, rather than a Bible.

He's also one of the most easily forgotten Presidents.

He practically had 3 terms - what with him being the brain and muscle of the Monroe administration - and has shaped America's history more than most books let on. I think he's one of the most admirable presidents we ever had - not to speak of his many great achievements that came after his presidency.
