Cheney Sisters Take Their Gay Marriage Fight to Facebook

<snip>

Liz Cheney, running for the Republican Senate primary in Wyoming, reminded the world how she opposes gay marriage during her Fox News Sunday appearance, despite the wishes of her sister, Mary Cheney, who is a lesbian with two children. "I love Mary very much, I love her family very much," Cheney said on Sunday morning. "This is just an issue on which we disagree."

This is not the first time the Cheney family rift over marriage equality has opened. Liz Cheney is, in fact, the only member of the Cheney family who opposes gay marriage. At first it seemed she was staking the position to help her chances getting elected. Dick Cheney, the former Vice President and father of the feuding daughters, campaigned to legalize gay marriage in Maryland.

But her comments didn't sit well with Heather Poe, who in some states would be Liz Cheney's sister-in-law. Poe is Mary Cheney's partner, the one with whom she has two children. Poe unloaded on the Republican candidate in a lengthy post on Facebook:

I was watching my sister-in-law on Fox News Sunday (yes Liz, in fifteen states and the District of Columbia you are my sister-in-law) and was very disappointed to hear her say "I do believe in the traditional definition of marriage."

Liz has been a guest in our home, has spent time and shared holidays with our children, and when Mary and I got married in 2012 - she didn't hesitate to tell us how happy she was for us.

To have her now say she doesn't support our right to marry is offensive to say the least

I can't help but wonder how Liz would feel if as she moved from state to state, she discovered that her family was protected in one but not the other.

I always thought freedom meant freedom for EVERYONE.

If you thought the appropriately named Dick Cheney was evil, you haven't met his serpentous daughter, Liz.

The Catholic Church teaches that homosexual sex is a sin, but we are supposed to love the homosexual. It doesn't work the conservatives loath homosexuals.

Glad you're here! Yeah, lots of 'em say "hate the sin but love the sinner." Yet that's not an easy bridge to cross for too many CONs. Hey, if the freakin' POPE says it's not for him to judge, how is it that they're entitled?

And we were able to see the damage he caused being in said position. Liz Cheney hasn't never wielded the kind of power her father did. Lord knows she might even do worse things if she ever go it. Lets hope she never finds out...

She may be taking the position that a majority of voters in Wyoming have. She doesn't dare support her sister's natural tendencies.

wasn't gay, then the whole Cheney family would be against gay marriage for sure. I have little sympathy for Mary Cheney, she supports a party that for the most part does not recognize her relationship to her partner nor do they wish for her to have equal rights. So her sister doesn't support gay marriage, well cry me a river! How about supporting candidates that support you, your partner and your children you privileged piece of shit!

that is really being an asshole-- throwing family under the bus to get what you perceive as political advantage. I mean, if she can't even defend and protect her own family, why would anyone trust her to care about her constituents?

What do the people of Wyoming think about this?

and I doubt if homophobia is a big driver of votes in Wyoming: sure, they are a bunch of macho shithead conservatives but there is a strong libertarian streak amongst the rugged individualist welfare ranchers, welfare farmers, welfare loggers, welfare miners and drillers etc etc etc.

Liz says this...
despite the wishes of her sister, Mary Cheney, who is a lesbian with two children. "I love Mary very much, I love her family very much," Cheney said on Sunday morning. "This is just an issue on which we disagree."

While thinking this?.....

---I just think Mary should accept the fact that I think the very essence of her being is a lie. She shouldn't have the same rights in her marriage as i do. I don't hate gay people, I just think others have the right to hate whomever they want and our government policies should reflect that hate. Mary should understand the intolerance of who she is represents the best part of my political party. I would much rather she stayed in a closet so I didn't have to deal with this. She's so inconsiderate. Who does she think she is anyway?----

Can someone pass the turkey?

Liz is waving her "more right wing than thou" flag.

My conspiracy-theory brain cell thinks Mary might just be going along with the fight, to help Liz's campaign. All orchestrated by Dad, and Karl Rove.
