(5,379 posts)going back several hundred, if not thousands, of years. Will we ever learn, I wonder. Not unless the press becomes free again and history & civics classes are upgraded massively in education.

(39,909 posts)In the 30s:
*use provocation of terrorist attacks
*continual wars
*invocations of Homeland Security to tame the press
*muzzle criticism
*tap Corporate Executives to run the ministries
*encourage friendly corporations to absorb the Media
*pour government money into corporate coffers
*enrich the wealthiest classes
*privatize the commons
*pared down Constitutional Rights
Damn.
Why does all that seem so familiar?
You will know them by their WORKS,
not by their excuses.

(511 posts)Most societies exhibiting these traits keep riding that train until the inevitable collapse. It seems obvious to us that as our masters spend more resources on "security", that we become less secure. This leads to totalitarianism... I hope it's not too bloody if/when it falls apart. Typically those situations are very hard on the very young and old. It seems odd that it's not obvious to many others.
But Americans have been effectively "handled". We aren't in the streets demanding adherence to the Constitution, and transparency. It seems that some of us are trying to make ends meet, and it soaks up a lot of our efforts. And many others are profiting (no matter how short term) from the status quo.
So America, the greatest social experiment in human history, is diminished. Never mind that it would be easier, and more profitable to do the right thing(s).
Peace out.
