Sheldon Adelson, top 2012 donor and casino magnate, readies to fight Internet gambling

Billionaire casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, whose record-breaking campaign spending in 2012 made him an icon of the new super-donor era, is leveraging that newfound status in an escalating feud with industry rivals over the future of gambling.

Adelson, best known for building upscale casino resorts in Nevada and more recently in Asia, wants to persuade Congress to ban Internet betting. He says the practice is a danger to society and could tarnish the industry’s traditional business model.

Nearly all of his competitors, including Caesars Entertainment and MGM Resorts, disagree. They say regulated Internet gambling can be done safely and can boost the industry.

To make his point, Adelson is preparing a public campaign to portray online gambling as a danger to children, the poor and others who could be exploited by easy access to Internet betting.

the Poker fascination is destructive to those who cannot afford to lose their money.Very similar to scratch off tickets or lotto. Most non professionals actually play as if the game were a scratch off ticket and they lose. Internet gambling does increase the volume in the Casino's, but more people end up broke or trying to explain to their wife or significant other where all the money went as a result of online gambling. Mainly because they refuse to read any books to actually learn how to win. imo online gambling is just another way to exploit the poor who are seeking a get rich quick fix, very similar to lotto and scratch off tickets, again. It should be illegal for that reason.

If you like Poker, read Doyle Brunson and learn how to play power Poker, or play for free. Play in a Casino and you will fold that low pocket pair when your opponent goes all in.

There are sophisticated, and not so sophisticated, software programs that track players ability to lose. Previous iterations of online poker games would have rooms with different people waiting to play. some rooms would be filled with people waiting to get in the games that third party software has identified as having heavy bettors that do not win effectively. I don't want to call them losers because it is a derogatory term.

But there is software available that can identify those who repeatedly lose games at surprisingly high frequency and with great quantities of cash. When the feds shut down the gambling sites a couple years ago there were numerous people who had accounts with 10's of thousands of dollars. It was a full time job and a lot of them targeted the unskilled in a predatory way by using third party software to gain a definitive advantage.
