How you describe yourself, politically?

What label do you attach to your political beliefs? Are you a Democrat? A Progressive? Both? Neither?

I vote democrat because they're the most leftward guys running for offices these days. If that changes, so do I. It's policy, not party.

That has a communistic inference to some, so I chose not to go there.

Your response goes, however, to the heart of why I posed the question. I'm looking to see if folks here are progressives who will vote Dem until something further left comes along, or whether this is just the left wing of the Democratic party.

I consider myself a moderate. People here at DU have suggested I should go to Free Republic where I belong. My conservative friends have me pegged somewhere near Mao on the political scale. Go figure?

I'm not sure what the use of being a "moderate" is. If you believe in something, believe in it all the way, don't just follow it until the halfway point and say "good enough." I'm not sure how you figure it, but I just can't see being "moderate" about anything that matters. if we're talking pizza toppings, okay, I can be moderate... if we're talking civil rights, social justice, environmental protection, education, infrastructure, safety nets, I can't be moderate.

I don't buy the entire agenda of either side. I'm economically conservative, and I believe in balanced budgets. However, I don't favor balancing budgets on the backs of the poor or middle class. To me, there's a more obvious answer -- The US of A needs to get out of the world police business.

So I'm moderate on average. What I really have is a mix of views. Nevertheless, I vote for Dems,

will simply select another term. I describe myself as leftist, so I can never answer these polls.

I'm leftist ideologically but pragmatic when it comes to American politics. I didn't used to be pragmatic, but 2000 cured me of that. I've long ago abandoned the idea that a politician should reflect my views. I pick who I think can be elected and has the temperament to get stuff done.

aligned mostly with someone like Bernie Sanders today, FDR past times - vote Democratic, but very liberal (both fiscal and social)/socialist/progressive - the labels are just confusing to me.

For years -- decades, really -- I've simply described myself as a liberal. But lately I've been so disappointed by the timidity of what often passes for liberalism now that I've taken to using either "progressive" or, more commonly, "old-school liberal."

I have been thinking of abandoning the label in favor of "independent," or something else, for three reasons.

1. The label "socialist" means different things to different people, so I don't feel that I am often communicating what I want to communicate.

2. If I strongly identify with a political label, then I will be very likely to develop biases that would impede my critical thinking skills.

3. Any political system can be used to oppress people, and I dislike oppression more than I like any political system.

Do you side with the underdog or the overlord?

Obviously if you side with the underdog then you're left wing.

I actually think there needs to be a balance but politics and the media is so heavily weighted to the right nowadays, there needs to be a left wing counterbalance to get the equilibrium right.

but with proportional representation as the means to enact policies. I'm more a Democratic socialist as it is defined in my poli sci book - socialism achieved by democracy and rather than complete state ownership - public ownership of some key industries, coops, unions and tight regulation of a market economy. (I'm a Keynesian). My book pretty much equates Democratic socialist and Social Democrat so...that's what I am. Either or.

Social democracy is a political ideology that officially has as its goal the establishment of democratic socialism through reformist and gradualist methods. Alternatively, social democracy is defined as a policy regime involving a universal welfare state and collective bargaining schemes within the framework of a capitalist economy.

An FDR Democrat.

Others though, have described me as a communist, a fascist, a rube, a taker, an authoritarian, and a bunch of other valid, English words with unfortunate revolving definitions that depend on the people using the labels so they may better understand other people.
