Kauai Council Overrides Mayor's Veto of Anti-Pesticide, GMO Bill

Straight to the Source
The Kauai County Council voted 5-2 Saturday to override Mayor Bernard Carvalho's veto of a controversial bill that would require large farms to disclose pesticide use and growth of genetically modified crops.
The bill now becomes law and will take effect in nine months.
Lawsuits are expected to be filed by biotech companies to challenge the new law.
Attorney Paul Alston, who represents agribusiness Syngeta, said, "There will definitely be a lawsuit."
He called the process the Council followed to override the mayor's veto "deeply troubling and suspect."

Hawaii County Council Passes GMO Ban
Posted by Civil Beat Staff on 11/19/2013 at 1:40PM HST (2 hours ago)
The Hawaii County Council passed a bill on Tuesday that bans biotech companies from taking up root on the Big Island and prohibits the expansion of genetically altered crops. (The papaya industry is exempt from the bill.)
The bill passed 6 to 3.
Mayor Billy Kenoi hasnt taken a public position on the bill, but he could potentially veto it, sending it back to the county council. The council can override a veto with a vote of six members.
Passage of Bill 113, which has sparked vigorous opposition from the farming industry, comes three days after Kauai pushed forward legislation that increases regulations of biotech.
