There are steps some companies are taking to soften the blow for employees working on the holidays.
With Walmart stores opening at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, workers will be eligible to receive holiday pay, which is pay equivalent to the average of the number of hours worked for the previous two weeks, in addition to their typical wages. They also will receive a 25 percent discount on items they purchase. The company will also feed them Thanksgiving dinner at work.
The company explains that most Walmart stores are open 24 hours, 7 days a week, so they have been open on Thanksgiving for years.
"Walmart associates are really excited to work that day," said Duncan Mac Naughton, executive vice president, chief merchandising and marketing officer for Walmart U.S. on a conference call on Thursday to discuss the company's holiday plans. "It's a pretty high energy day for associates as well."

(1,673 posts)if they stayed home to be with their families on Thanksgiving day and were paid for that day off.
And those well deserving, hard working employees were given a complementary, complete turkey dinner for their family, too.
Add to that a living wage where every Walmart employee can LIVE the American Dream.
Imagine that for just a moment.
Can you imagine it?
Can you imagine what would happen to all of US?
I can.

(9,033 posts)if you were in danger of going without food because of missing a day you'd be "excited" to work on Thanksgiving too.

(15,682 posts)They're getting paid better that day than any other day of the year. After crap wages all the other days, damn straight they're excited. A couple extra bucks and a turkey leg. Who wouldn't want to give up family time for that?
Adding this --> just in case it is needed.

I'm not really a big fan of anyone being open on Thanksgiving but heck that's not a bad deal.
But maybe that's because I'm used to working holidays...plus I love free food.

(28,749 posts)Let's say week 1 you work 20 hours or 5 4 hour shifts. Week two you work 20 hours in 4 5 hour shifts. Then on Thanksgiving you will receive pay for your average shift of ~4.5 hours plus however many hours you work that day.
In some states they will also be paid 1.5x or 2x time but it's not the deal you thought it was.

(23,156 posts)From 9am to 8pm. But I work in a hospital, so working on holidays, even Thanksgiving and Christmas is the norm.
Yeah, I'll make extra money, which will be nice. But I am saying that this is the last Thanksgiving I'll ever work. This is my fifth in a row, and I've already told my supervisor that next year, in 2014, I want Thanksgiving off. What I haven't told her, and won't for quite some time, is that I'm planning to retire on October 1, 2015. I'm already 65. I'll be 67 at that point. It's about time.
Meanwhile, I will not shop anywhere on Thanksgiving Day. Not this year, not ever. Oh, and I never shop at WalMart. Maybe I will someday if they start paying their employees decently, and if what they carry in their stores isn't total crap. I haven't been inside one in about ten years now, and the when I was last going to them somewhat regularly, I'd noticed how the quality of their stuff had declined precipitously.

(3,922 posts)I know this because I worked for them for three years. Time-and-a-half for me was $10.87/hour.
And Duncan is full of shit. Not one of my ex-coworkers is excited to work on Thanksgiving. In fact, they're pissed off.
