Paul Ryan: Poor People Need Jesus, Not Food Stamps

Paul Ryan: Poor People Need Jesus, Not Food Stamps

By Jonathan Chait at New York Magazine

http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2013/11/paul-ryan-poor-people-need-jesus-not-food.html

"SNIP...................................

Ryan’s new line seems similar to the old one:

“Paul wants people to dream again,” Holloway said of Ryan. “You don’t dream when you’ve got food stamps.”

In fact, lots of people who survived on food stamps — like J.K. Rowling — went on to achieve great things.

The other emerging element of Ryan’s anti-poverty agenda is Jesus:

“You cure poverty eye to eye, soul to soul,” he said last week at the Heritage forum. “Spiritual redemption: That’s what saves people.”

she had free health care, etc. because she lived in a "socialist" country. Ms. Rowling has now also donated money to charity to help others.

If Jesus said what they say he said in the spirit he said it, he would not be the Man that a whole religion is based on - he would be an effing Republican who despises anyone lower than him and worse off than him, while wanting more, more, more for himself.

I think it may have something to do with the belief that you don't really have to follow the *teachings* of Christ, all you have to do is accept Him as your Saviour, even if you have done nothing but rotten things all your life and you are on your death bed when you make your acceptance speech.

Food assistance for us 4 kids. Even that is not really enough for growing kids so we grew food, people were helpful....but I don't know what we would have done without that baseline level of support. Mind you, during these periods BOTH of my parents worked.

Paul Ryan can go fuck himself with a tricorn hat.

I grew up appreciative of those benefits even though my mom was ashamed we had to use them and us kids were ashamed to use reduced/free lunches. What happened was us kids had a fighting chance to do well and make something of ourselves. Often, the dream being actuized is of the growing child who Needs healthy food to prosper while their parents break their backs Hoping to build something better.

Repuicans love fetuses, but they show with their every word and action they hate poor children even though those kids are poor through no fault of their own.

Who is always praising atheist Ayn Rand's message of how moral it is to be selfish? No slam at those who are atheist, I have my share of uncertainty in that regard myself. Still, it seems to me Paul Ryan needs to either get on the Jesus bandwagon... Oh wait a minute it was that pesky Jesus that said:

‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

I guess maybe he had better stick to the Ayn Rand side of his nature least he be labeled a fucking hypocrite! I simply can't believe the unmitigated gall of these people - distorting the truth to suit their agenda and talking out both sides of their ass at the same time. Sorry to be so worked up here, but these people are starting to really bug me!

If Ayn Needed Medicare, How Can We Do Without?

snip//

"In 2011, news broke that notorious libertarian/objectivist Ayn Rand had accepted Social Security and Medicare in the 1970s after she was diagnosed with lung cancer (unsurprisingly she was a cigarette-cancer connection denier). Among liberal circles, a lot of attention was paid to the hypocrisy angle of all this (and much more to taking SS cheques than enrolling in Medicare). A person who spent her life railing against collectivism and dependency accepting the benefits of the very programs her beliefs called "evil."

Hypocrisy isn't the important thing here. Ideological failure is.

To the defenders of Rand, the most common reply is that Rand had paid into these programs through her involuntarily seized taxes, and if she was going to be forced ("at gunpoint" as libertarians always say) to pay for these programs, why shouldn't she at least get something back from them? Actually, I don't really disagree with that. Liberals didn't support the Bush tax cuts, but I doubt many liberals gave back the government the extra taxes they would have had to pay under the Clinton rates after the tax cuts passed. You're not typically morally obligated to martyr yourself for your beliefs.

No, the really important fact that this episode reveals is not Rand's hypocrisy, but the utter failure of her ideas. Even she couldn't live without the social safety net. Here's how the woman who persuaded her to take part in socialism explained it to a fellow objectivist in 1998 (emphasis added)"

She donated a million pounds to the Labour Party in the last election, specifically because of the Tories being worse on preventing child poverty:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/labour/3021309/Harry-Potter-author-JK-Rowling-gives-1-million-to-Labour.html

She is, by the way, a practicing Christian (Scottish Episcopal Church), but unlike Ryan, doesn't think this requires you to support kicking poor people.

Incidentally, though she was on benefits at one time, she was never on 'food stamps', as these are not part of the system in the UK.

There was that loaves and fishes thing - he could have told the people who came to hear him, you don't need food, all you have to do is listen to me and god will take care of everything. But it is said that he managed to come up with (conjure up?) enough bread and fish to feed a whole crowd, because they needed food.

Would Ryan say Jesus shouldn't have given food to the crowd because he was just enabling them and maybe just bribing them to stay and listen to him? Wouldn't that be heresy?

Firstly, It's a hell of a lot easier to dream if you're not starving to death. Maslow's Pyramid, motherfucker. I straight up DARE the GOP to start denying the science of human psychology next (and that's not even the hard stuff, that's high-school-level, 095 level PSYCH right there).

Second...as someone brought up in the Catholic Tradition, yeah, I think spiritual redemption CAN be important to a lot of peoples' outlook, and therefore, overall well-being. But you can't EAT THAT. It's why the man from Nazareth went out of his way to actually FEED PEOPLE.

Anymore, the more they try, the more they FAIL. And even the not-so-smart people are starting to catch wise.
