Duke lacrosse accuser Crystal Mangum found guilty of murder

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - The woman who falsely accused three Duke University lacrosse players of rape was convicted of second-degree murder Friday in the stabbing death of her boyfriend.

The jury deliberated for about six hours over two days before reaching its verdict in the trial of 34-year-old Crystal Mangum, who was sentenced to between 14 years and 18 years in prison.

Ms. Mangum claimed at the time in 2006, that she had been sexually assaulted at the party hosted by the Duke Lacrosse team. She maintains today that the assault did take place. That is what makes her a victim.

Whether or not you believe her, or whether or not the attorney general believes her is irrelevant. She made the claim, and that makes her a victim. It has not been proven otherwise.

I try to be as accurate, objective, and fair-minded in my blogs, flogs, and other writings. Unlike the biased mainstream media which refers to Mangum as the accuser in the Duke Lacrosse case. Although this is technically correct, it tends to be a bit misleading as she was also the victim in the case. Therefore, I include both terms when referring to Ms. Mangum as I believe that it is most truthful.

I've actually read about this guy in some of the Carolina papers. Apparently there is a cottage industry of defending Mangum and Nifong and soliciting funds.

Still claims the lacrosse players are guilty despite all evidence to the contrary.

"For awhile, I had to listen to how the poor dear lacrosse players at Duke are being persecuted just because they held someone down and fucked her against her will—not rape, of course, because the charges have been thrown out. Can’t a few white boys sexually assault a black woman anymore without people getting all wound up about it?"

Rape is abhorrent. Rapists should rot in prison; I think we all agree with that. However, no innocent person should ever go to prison for any crime unless that person is proven guilty.

I can't imagine the dark ages chaos were that reversed.

Accusations must be proved, beyond a reasonable doubt.

That standard hopefully holds up much better in our justice system than it does on DU.

Unfortunately, we read all too often about people who have been exonerated after spending decades in prison for crimes they didn't commit. I think that sometimes the desire to blame somebody for horrific crimes outweighs prosecutors' and jurors' obligations to make sure the right person is punished.

I don't know where you got that statistic. I do know that when the Duke case broke a lot of us were attacked for saying "let's wait to see the evidence."

Good thing we waited before just going ahead and castrating those privileged little bastards, eh?

When I read stuff like this

"He admitted Mangum was in the bathroom when he kicked in the door and that he grabbed her by the hair. He said as they continued to fight, Mangum tried to stab him several times before stabbing him in the side of the chest as he stood in the hallway."

Read more here: http://www.newsobserver.com/2013/11/22/3396116/jury-in-mangum-murder-trial-continue.html#storylink=cpy

That does sound like self defense to me. Dude kicked in a door and attacked her. How is that NOT self defense? Because at some point he tried to walk away? Well, the story, supposedly HIS story says "as they continued to fight".

The fight was over. You can't stab somebody after the fight is over even if you're still pissed. Apparently, according to the story, the forensic evidence supported his version of the story. The fact that she claimed that he choked her down and tried to stab her but that she had no injuries on her certainly didn't support her version.

not to prosecute her for falsely accusing the Duke players of rape and also not to re-try her for the charges that the jury deadlocked on in her previous assault and arson case.

Yeah, this woman was (and is) a time bomb. She even wrote a book after it was proven (one of the players she accused was at an ATM when she claims he was raping her) that she made false rape allegations. There is no doubt in my mind that she will ruin more lives when she gets out of prison.
