1. I'd like to think this is true, but...

The other day I heard a young man say he'd rather pay a penalty than buy health insurance under the Act because, in his words, "why should I pay for the sick and the old?" The answer is he has a responsibility to do so, as a member the same society they inhabit.

...increasingly, the answer I hear is "why is is this my problem?"

I think the better, more truthful answer is this: "Because we have to pay for the results of the activities you perform while healthy -- like flipping over that ATV, running your snowmobile into a tree, slipping on ice while jogging, falling off that ladder while cleaning your roof, treating you in the ER when you got hold of your friend's Viagra and decided to see what would really happen if you got an erection lasting 4 hours or more, etc. If you or your s/o get pregnant (as young healthy people are apt to do) we pay for your childbirth; we pay for your little one to be in the NICU if need be. Health insurance for the young manages the unexpected and infrequent; health insurance as we get older manages the expected and frequent. Once we hit 67, we roll onto Medicaid, which manages us until the end. Hopefully, the ACA helps make those first 67 years healthier and more manageable."

3. My son-in-law was one of those "young invincibles"

Til he tore a muscle in his groin (ouch!) doing construction work. Luckily his wife is a nurse and would not let him be without insurance. Injury and illness happen to "healthy" young people too.

4. We were all young invincibles at one time.

From the age of 10 to 34 I was in 11 car accidents, the fact that I lived made me feel extra invincible. I didn't have health insurance (even tho my dad was a broker) but because I was mostly the innocent passenger, I got care.
