Netanyahu Underestimated Our President

Stung By Iranian Nuclear Deal, Netanyahu Prepares For Fallout At Home
Israel’s prime minister had made stopping a nuclear Iran the focus of his political career. After world powers reached a deal with Tehran to slow its program, but keep it intact, Israelis began to turn on him.

.............

“He knows that people will be coming for him, pointing the finger at him and asking how he let this happen,” a Netanyahu aide told BuzzFeed by phone Sunday.

.........................

“All he needed to do was stop Iran. That’s all we elected him to do for us, and we elected him twice in a row on that promise,” Israeli schoolteacher Mordechai Ben Yishai told Israel’s army radio Sunday morning. “As far as I’m concerned he failed. He was all hot air and no results.”

................

“There is no doubt that Netanyahu is a big loser in the Iran deal,” said Gil Hoffman, political editor at the Jerusalem Post. “His whole political career is built on two things: number one is that he persuaded Israelis that only he could protect them from Iran, and number two is his image as someone who could speak to the world in his perfect English in a persuasive way better than any other Israelis. And here he failed.”

.................

“He isolated us from the United States at a time when we should have been strengthening our bond with them, and he put his faith in the wrong people. He thought he could fly to Russia or France and change everything, and all he got was pretty words and empty gestures,” one lawmaker in Bennet’s party said. “At the end of the day, Israel will look for someone to blame and they will blame him.”

Not to knock the true progressives that I know are in Israel, but... they're nowhere near the halls of power. Israelis don't elect them. About the closest we could look forward to is Tzipi, and she's only progressive if you compare her to Bibi or Avi, really.

While i'd like for this to create a sea change in Israeli politics, the reality is just that the government of Israel is packed to the gills with militarists, religious nuts, and crypto-fascists. Unless the people of Israel really clean house the next time elections roll around, these asshats will stay in power, be re-appointed to cabinet positions, etc. And part of me is afraid that Bibi's "inability to produce results" (i.e., piles od dead iranians) will lead a lot of Israeli voters to go even harder to the right than they're already prone to doing.

with his building approval while we had diplomats over there. That was his first crucial mistake. After that, Obama had reason to give him the middle finger, culminating with a wholesale "fuck you" after the campaign.

His tantrums have made him an international pariah. Few states will even deal with him other than do the perfunctory public gestures.

From what I read even the majority of Israeli people are against his policies and the stuff he says.

It took a Democratic administration to bring a peaceful solution for Netanyahu's citizens, yet he shows no humility or gratitude. Must be that he's embarrassed to have positioned himself with greedy American corporatists who profit from war.
