U.S. Postal Service worker fatally shot in Prince George’s County

A U.S. Postal Service mail carrier was shot and killed Saturday night while on his rounds in Prince George’s County, authorities said.

The shooting occurred about 7:20 p.m. in the Cheverly-Landover area of the county, said Officer Harry Bond, a police spokesman.

Apparently the man was delivering mail on or near Reed Street when the shooting occurred.

One resident of the street said he was returning home just as the carrier had finished placing mail into the letter box at his house.

It was well after sunset when the shooting occurred. Residents of the area said mail is not usually delivered there so late.

“It was mighty late,” the neighbor said.

It was thought that the carrier’s unfamiliarity with the route might have been linked to the lateness of his deliveries.

Bond said the carrier died at the scene. He said no motive for the attack had been determined by late Saturday night.

Washington Post may be a national source for its political coverage, but this is in the WP local section.
