Macklemore Attacked For Support Of Trayvon Martin At AMA Awards

Macklemore, the rapper probably most-famous for his 2012 song “Same Love,” won Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album for “The Heist” at the American Music Awards last night in Florida. The 30-year old who began his music career in 2000 as Professor Macklemore, took a moment to protest racism and racial profiling, and to honor Trayvon Martin, killed by George Zimmerman in the Sunshine State last year.

“Now that I’m sitting here in front of millions of people, I’d like to address something extremely important to me,” Macklemore announced. “I was talking to my friend before the show and he reminded me of a great Martin Luther King quote. He said, ‘Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.’ And due to the fact that we are in Florida tonight accepting this award, I want to acknowledge Trayvon Martin and the hundreds and hundreds of kids each year that are dying due to racial profiling and the violence that follows it. This is really happening. These are our friends, our neighbors, our peers, and our fans, and it’s time that we look out for the youth and fight against racism and the laws that protect it.”

All of which, of course, led failed former Congressman Allen West to go, shall we say, ballistic?

In “Rapper Macklemore gets ‘Stupid Award’ at AMA,” West writes on his blog, “Macklemore, in my estimation, gets the recognition for the stupid.”

The one-term Tea Party Congressman is, we believe, for the first time in his adult life having to learn what it’s like to work for a paycheck not paid for by the taxpayers. But he writes that he thinks Macklemore — whose single “Thrift Shop” with Ryan Lewis reached the top of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart this year — should “leave serious intellectual analysis to those of us who live in the real world.”

Yes, West means himself.

He calls Macklemore “a walking example of the low information voter.”

Seems to be a Tea Party catch phrase of some sort. I've heard many of them say that. They assume anyone who disagrees with them simply lacks information.

It's like the hopelessly uncool, finally deciding they know what Da Bomb means and applying it completely incorrectly.

Low information voter has been a DEM phrase in use for years and years to describe the phenomenon of voters watching FAUX News and having their intelligence erode and their ability to analyze facts hampered by a lack of facts to analyze.

It also implies voting against your own best interest.

Standard Repub tactics. Project onto your enemies your own faults. T-baggers are the model for 'low information' voters, but probably more accurate to call them 'fantasy world' voters, since the truth is something they avoid.

I was thinking when I first saw this story: in another era, Macklemore would be called a Commie or N-word lover by the John Birch Society cult members. He'd have to defend his art before the HUAC. We'd never hear his music on the radio for years.
